I might have a chance to buy this one cheap. It last ran in the 1980 corn season then Herman shedded it due to his wife having ill health. It has a 60 bushel grain tank and a Chevy straight 6 engine. Herman thought it was the late 40s but I think its the late 50s. Has the mounted 2 row corn head and there is also a 10 foot grain table that is in very good shape.

I would say it's an early E, with the
engine swapped. The OEM engine on the E was the
same as a D-17 tractor. You might look on the serial number below the engine near the battery.
I believe the first letter is the model ie. E-5005
or something. I've got one like it I want to fix
up for 8.5 acres of corn next year. Paid $125.
Expensive parts are available thru Agco but there
are many of these on combine salvage yards and alot of parts are standard bearings, sprockets,
chains etc. Good Luck!

Between the Gleaner board and talking to the owner, it is in fact an E. He bought it used in the mid-1960s but thinks the GM engine came with it new. I don't know about that. If I make an offer, it would be like $200 for the combine, corn head and grain table. But since I just got offered a JD 7700 for $7,500 negotiable, I might get stupid----- ---

Punch below and you can see additional shots. Folks on the Gleaner board think its either an A or very early E. It has the GM 6 cylinder and the 10 foot table which would make me think its an E.

I think it's an early E because you say it has a GM gas engine. I really can't tell by the picture. Look inside the cab, probably above the door, and it will indicate. E's cabs where optional, so look all around the operator station if necessary for a number plate. If you can find a serial, I can give you a year of manufacture. Make sure you buy it darn cheap, because the last ones of these I saw were 0 hour that couldn't be sold and Allis would not take them back leaving the bank to hold them. They were finally hauled away for scrap a couple of years ago looking about like the condition pictured. To my knowledge, and I checked on this recently as a matter of fact, all parts for a E Gleaner are still available, down to the canvas for the drapers on the header conveyor. I have thought seriously about putting a machine like this back into service.

Thanks Tom. I doubt I would give Herman more than $200 for it. If I approach this right I might beable to haul it off for free. The only reason Herman quit using it was his wife became stricken with cancer in 1991 so he started hiring Ernie to combine his fields. The Gleaner was running fine when he parked it in the shed in the fall of 1990.

I have been thinking a lot lately about rebuilding a combine, and have asked a lot of people who write in here a lot of questions. Sign on to a site called the "Combine Talk Show". I have just finished an older Ferguson model 44SP windrowing machine. I thought that it would be more complex than a tractor, but it was not. The reel etc. can be rebuilt with some simple fabrication instead of a lot of expensive parts purchases. E-mail me. I like to show off pictures. Tom S.

Tom I posted earlier this week on the Gleaner board and I sure got their attention. I have a call into Herman to ask more specific questions.

Herman just called. He said that it is an E and definitely has the GM straight 6 engine in it. He thought it was 6 volt. Cab came with the combine.

It looks like an E, but they had a 4 cyl. allis engine. F's used a 292 truck engine but an F is a lot newer than this one in the pic. But I can be safe in saying that it is not an R 72. Measure across the cylinder an E is 28" and the A is 32". {I think} If I remember right the A had a 6 cyl. allis engine. Check at www.harvesting.com click other ag sites.

Its 1 am why did I get this brainstorm now? I'll put my money on it being an A. Now maybe I can go back to sleep.

Thanks Wayne. It does have the 6 cylinder motor. I'll call Herman today and ask him some questions on it. Appreciate the help.

I once had one like that. It worked well and cleaned the seed very well, but it was so old and worn down that every time you used it you had to fix something.

Jason it would only be used to run my 9 acres for fun. I cash rent anyway. I want to check around though on the availability of parts.
