I'm sure that this question has probably been asked here, before, but I didn't find it in the archives.

I'm looking for options/suggestions/ideas for mounting a John Deere #5 sickle mower to a 3-point-hitch (specifically a Ford 8N and/or Massey Ferguson TO-35).

Thanks...

Steve

P.S. I'd gladly accept emailed instructions/photos, etc. I've un-hid my email address, just remove the space after the '@' sign.

Get yourself an original John Deere Manual for the #5 and it will show diagrams of hooking it up to every tractor and hitch available (IH, Oliver, Ford, Fergusen, etc, etc). You can usually find them pretty reasonable on Ebay, but I am pretty sure reprints are available also. The manual is OM-H10-453

Thanks... I'm keeping my eye on them (out on eBay). I've registered with John Deere's parts department... but they want $30 each for their manuals!! That's a little steeper than I REALLY wanted to go, for manuals...

We used a JD mower on an 800 Ford for years. The mower had a U shped bracket that bolted to the 3 pt drawbar which was held up by the bars running to the top lift bracket on the tractor. A cable ran to the disconnected top 3 pt lift arm and lifted the mower.

Thanks folks...

I'm wanting to collect ideas and (without "reinventing the wheel") come up with what works best for me and my tractor....

I appreciate all the comments... Even yours, Dave... I would've preferred to get a 3-point mower, it just wasn't in my budget...

Steve

Don't mention it. I was wrong. I had forgotten about the hookup for Fords. It is on pg 80 of the manual and shows the pulley system for raising and lowering. Deere did a good thing when they made this mower. Good luck with yours!
Stay safe and have fun.

When mounting a #5 JD mower to a 8N, T030 or any of the smaller three point tractors you remove the three point arms and lift links and use a 3"X3" angle iron beacket from the fender mounting bolts that comes back and has maybe a 30 degree drop to it which will bolt to to the ears of the #5 mower. Then you put a pin and clevis with a cable and pulley setup from the RH lift arm to the sickle bar lifting arm on the mower. This is how you can lift your cutter bar. Set the mower up so that the drag shoe is almost centered behind the right rear tire. There was an old man who mowed for my dad every year with no problems except for me and my H Farmal and souped up gearbox #5 mower.

Thanks, Jim...
I've 'spoken' to Arne about this and I'm not saying that I don't believe him (or anything like that), I'm just exploring my options... seeing what anyone/everyone else has come up with, and combine all of those thoughts and ideas with whatever pops outta my head and see what works best...

I like Arne's ideas, but then I like RJ's idea, too... I had pretty much visualized something along those lines...

Of course, Leland's simple approach has its merits, too. Simple is great!!

I'm also thinking about bolting my 11-hole drawbar to the drawbar on the mower (with a couple or 5 washers, as spacers) and hook up that way... Just use the lower lift arms, for use, and run a chain from the back end of the frame, to the top-link point on the tractor, for transport (and use the mechanical adjustments for height, etc.)...

I figure I'll probably play around with it, maybe 2, 3 or 4 different ways of hooking it up and see what I like best, what works best and what's easiest to hook up and unhook...

Thanks...

Steve

That makes sense since you have "3 or 4" mowers to play with! ;)

Now you just need 3 or 4 tractors to go with them.

There are ways and procedures available for doing this and many people are around who would tell you to go for it. I also read on the forums once about a guy who wanted to pull his hay equipment behind his pickup. Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you should. The #5 mower was not actually meant to be mounted in this way as you probably know. The problem usually arises in keeping the mower at the correct level and not having it push up on the lift arms. Personally, I think it unsafe to use equipment in ways for which it was not designed. JD made a few really nice 3 pt mowers that are basically the same only designed for 3 pt attachment. My opinion, get one of those or a nice Ford mower that matches the tractor.
