hi,

I'm wondering what are the pros and cons of rear mount booms versus side mount booms (mowers or sprayers or ditchers, anything on a boom)

I thank y'all in advance for your time

Mathieu

The side mounts are generally a real pain to mount & are specific to one tractor model, so you can"t use the implement with your other tractors. You need to search a while to find something that fits your tractor - or be good at fabricating your own mounts. The mounting brackets often interfere with loaders & other implements, and these items often don"t lift as high or have low ground clearence. You basically are dedicating the tractor to this use for a time, as it"s too awkward to remove quickly.

They are much easier to watch & more manoverable - when you turn the implement follows the direction you are turning.

Rear mounts are much easier to mount. If you find one you can use it - assuming 3pt, very universal. You can put it on or take it off in 5-10 minutes, and use it with any similar sized tractor you have. Very flexable.

You have to turn around a bit to watch them, and when you turn the tractor left, the implement being behind the rear axle will first go right, so very close tight trimming is more difficult.

I would run a Super C Farmall for a neighbor that had a side mount sickle bar mower that I liked. You could mow hay then pick up the bar and pull a hay rake with it. We have several Ford 5610 tractors where I work with Tiger side mount rotary mowers and Rhino CY72 rear decks and one with a Tiger Boom Axe with a long reach that had a 500# weight on the left rear tire.
