Fixing to have to dig some post holes. I haven't used my phd in about 20 years. Last time I recall using it, diging in black dirt, seems I was going through about 3 bolts per hole. Should that be a grade 8 or better case hardend bolt? I'm talking of the bolt that goes through the auger and the digging unit shaft not the bolt at the pto/drive shaft. While I'm at, how bout the bolt at the pto shaft too. Thats a splined shaft, so I don't know how much it would matter. Thanx.

check the holes the pins go through. if these holes are worn then the pins will shear more easily. if they are you can drill new holes through going the other way to give you a new serface. or drill the hole out to the next size larger.

You could just weld it solid. You don't seem too concerned with bustin' a gear or twisting a shaft . Let 'er rip!!

Thanx for the help. It's an old ford 903 real heavy auger, behind a diesel 3000. I'll give the 5's a try and see what happens. I think an 8 at the auger shaft would be ok though. Thanks again.

In my danhuser auger I use an 8. Ive worked for a neighbor using his (same as mine) and he uses old head bolts. These are very good diggers though, dont know what brand or how heavy yours is.

Three per hole???? How fast are you dropping the auger????

The shear pin protects the gears in the head. I believe most use gr 2 bolts, but you need to consult the manufaturer. I would expect using gr8 would ensure something else will break...

I go through about 1 grade 8 bolt every hour on my King Kutter bushhog. If a king Kutter can handle a grade 8(and an old IH 47 baler uses grade 5), your PHD should handle at least a 5 if not an 8.

Holy COW!!
Sorry to disagree with you on this, but the reason for the shear bolt is to protect the drive unit of what ever you are using.
Most recomend a grade 2 bolt. If you are busting alot of bolts. I suggest its not the bolts fault.
When I 1st started using by Bush Hog I was busting about 5 or 6 bolts a hr. I have since learned how to use my hog in such a way as to not break bolts. I can go all day now and maybe break one. Forces me to use the equipment with in its limmits.
Had the same problem with my old NH68 baler. Bustin grade 2 bolts all day long. Finnaly figured out that the knotter chain had some strech in it. Advanced the timming out of factory spec, but to suit the chain and bolt problem went away. I wonder what would eventualy happen had I just stuck a grade 8 bolt in there?
Not trying to get any thing started but my Gramps always told me to trat your equipment as good as you can. Grade 8,s show no lovins for your stuff.

Don't worry so much about getting his nose out of joint...you're doing him a favor.
