Plates can be the trickiest part, we always get them at the local coop's. If one don't have it the next one will. If the fertilizer boxes are rusted out, go to a bone yard, everything else a JD dealer can get.

Marker parts like rollers, chain, etc. are discontinued. I picked up a bunch of NOS stuff on eBay last year, just in case.

We had a 494 planter and always used the standard JD cylinder that was supplied with a new JD tractor, such as a 4010 or 4020. We also pulled the planter with a Super M, and used the standard IH cylinder that came with it. Never had to change hydraulic pressures on the tractors to lift the planter. Back in the days of the 494, we used dry starter fertilizer, so we had those boxes on the planter in addition to the seed and insecticide boxes.

Like most implements, an 8 inch stroke cylinder is the standard, usually a 2 or 3 inch diameter. Pressure limit of the cylinder depends on your tractor- that is what supplies the pressure TO the cylinder. It is a JD planter, so the logical source of parts is the JD dealer. A 494 is over 30 years old, so you might have to go to salvage yards, etc. for what the dealer does not provide.

Our 494A uses an 8" cylinder. You have to use an 8" or you're planter won't go all the way down.
