NH Baler Design

I have a NH 66 baler that has been good for the 12 acres that I hay. I've put about 1000 bales through it this year, and have been pleased with it. I take good care of it, but today the chain that drives the wadboard broke a link, freezing the wadboard in just the right place for the plunger to strike it, bending the wadboard carrier.

I can scrounge around and find replacement parts, but it concerns me that such severe damage can occur from a chain breaking.

Did NH design in more fault tolerance in later years, to protect the wadboard and the needles? If so, what models should I look for if I decide to upgrade?

Thanks,

Michael

Well Michael, I guess I should not write this because I am a New Holland man, but I have tryed to always be fair with my comments. Although the 66 is the last of the wad boards, most other New Holland designs can cause severe damage by a simple chain breaking or a spring loaded arm breaking. as well. This is where an auger feed machine has it over out fork feeding machines. The augers never get in front of the plunger. However, I will put our New Holland machines up against anything else as far as capacity is concerned. Also, our fork feed machines will bale ALL types of crops where as the auger machines sruggle feeding certain crops. Steve

Steve, don't all auger feed balers have packer forks to distribute the hay in the chamber?

Rick, my bad. That is an excellent point unless the packer forks are driven in some other manner then a chain that could tear. Thanks for the comment. Steve

Steve,

Thanks for your help. I did not mean to bad-mouth the design of this baler. In many ways I think it is elegant, and it has lasted almost 50 years :)

I knew that this was an early model, and I just wondered if going to one that was a few years younger might save some worrying.

I am pleased with this baler, so I'll just say "that's farming" and repair it :)

Michael

You have the last of the NH wad-boards. everything newer has some fingers instead of the board.

Newer ones did not have this setup, but you can still buy this part or get a used one, this baler is very simple so I would keep it if it is large enough for you.
