How to replace outer ledger plate on NH sickle

I need to replace the outside ledger plate on my NH 450 sickle mower,got the old one out just find but can't figure out how to peen the rivet and hold the plate in place at the same time. Seen in the archives that someone said to weld them in and that would be fine but don't know where to weld at so the sickle wouldn't hit the weld. Please help. Thanks

They make a counter sunk bolt for the ledger plates in the out end shoe. I"ve been using them for seven or eight years and they work great. Way easier than riveting and a better than welding them in as well. You can replace the ledgers right in the field.

Yep, weld it on. I've been doing it for 20 years or more and it works great. I'm not sure how to answer your question about how. Simply weld it on. Steve

Steve and everyone else thanks for the advice. On how to weld it on,I should of said where to weld it at? I can't figure out where to weld at so the sickle wnn't hit the weld and if you weld it on the side seems like that would take away from the cutting edge. Help

It is possible to weld it on the leading edge and still leave the top edge sharp. But, even if you do weld into the top edge, it will still work. Better to have a ledger plate with a messed up cutting edge then to have no plate at all. Steve

Weld it on!!!!! I riveted mine on by drilling 2 holes through the edge of the shoe where the head of the rivets are and put a punch through them and used the punch (In a vise) as an anval and rivit the rivits using a ball peen hammer or rivit punch in an air chisel. The only problem, I lost 2 ledger plates already in less than an hour of trimming. I was told on this forum to weld and so far so good.. I riveted the third ledger plate in (To hold it in place for welding) and welded the back of the plate edge, the front edge, rear edge etc. Weld it good so it won't come off. I know my rivits before were done right but for some reason, they just sheared off.

Take the shoe off if you haven't already. Find a piece of flat steel that will just fit through the opening where the sickle runs. put the ledger plate and rivets in place, slide the steel through on top of them and place the whole thing upside down in a vise with the steel supporting it across the jaws. Close the vise as much as possible without disturbing the placement of the plate, and peen the rivets. It may help if you have someone else hold everything for you. You need to hit the rivet hard enough to swell it to fill the hole, not just head it over. I made a heading punch to go in my air chisel, it is easier to get an accurate hit with it.
