The most useful impliment on my hill has become my ATV, last night had a real gut check on how dangerous they can be. I never 'play', use it to check and herd cows instead of a horse or a truck. Last night I found a sink hole, just big enough for a nose dive, knew it was there and just creeping along in 1st gear. Still did an over the handlebars roll. Trip to the ER has me with a laterally broken collarbone, multiple torn tendons, and a world of pain. Cant be too careful out there.

Sorry about your bad luck, I ride a lot of water ways and encounter a lot of tile holes your right can't be to careful don't give up on them there useful tools GET WELL SOON enjoy this idle time it won't last long if you are anything like me. they cut off my big toe and could only sit for 3 day and was back at it.

Thanks, yeah I was back on it today. Still had to check the cows. In your other reply you mentioned helmets, you bet. Like I said below Doc told me if I hadnt had on my brain bucket I'd be dead. I'm a real believer.

One saved me about 16 yrs ago when a car took a bike out from under me that was a ride that day be safe enjoy your posts and picking your brain I still have a lot to learn only 42 still a pup to you ea.

The worst accident (short of death) I ever saw was when I was in highschool. One of my friends was on ice, in 2wd spinnin the rear tires goin real slow. He caught a dry patch and that machine reared right up and went over. Nearly cut his arm clean off. They patched him back up but you can still see the line of staples they used to put him back together, 12 years later.

Hate to hear that !! Like John said it gets harder to heal every yr. I cover alot of rough ground on a quad too checking cows , fence etc. I bought me a old 4x4 s-10 blaser to start doing alot of that running in , it gets around in tight spots and the comfert on my old bones is alot better , keep fencing tools in the back and not worry about the weather . Hope you get to feeling better . Tim

David, I hope you heal up quickly. You're getting too old for that sort of thing...Old bones get brittle!

I always try to make something good come out of every BAD thing. Use your experience to drive home the saftey issue with your students...Maybe you can prevent at least one of them from having a terrible accident of their own.

Thanks from all of us, for the reminder of what can happen when you least expect it. NEVER let your guard down.

Yup, got finished week ago yesterday. Finished stacking the last of the round bales in the barn Sunday. Still got some mowing to do, but I can do that. Thinking that vacation idea sounds better and better.

feel your pain, brother. Last year I was atv-ing along my pond & looked up the field at what might've been a newborn calf. wasnt but I thought I was stopped. Was slowly drifting however until my front wheels were over the bank. ATV tipped & I rocked back & brought it level then it tipped for good & rolled over on me & pinned me to the mud of pond bottom. Tried to get my head above water but was couple foot short of reaching surface. Gave a mighty yank on my leg & pulled it out (lucky it didnt snag on a peg or something). Broke water surface, thought I could walk out but I was in 8' of water. swam to shore in freezing weather. NEVER TAKE YOUR EYE OFF THE BALL!

Sorry to hear about your accident and hope you have a speedy recovery. A couple of cattleman got killed out here on their ATV's in the past six months. Course one of our neighbors got thrown off her horse also. This ranchin' is a dangerous business!

Thanks, you're right it sure is. Doc said if I hadnt had on a 'brain bucket' I'd be dead and if I had been on a horse I'd probably be paralyzed as I did an impact in exactly the same fashon as Christopher Reeves did.
