I have a 717 with a 8 knife drum. Was this an option or did someone put a drum from a different model in this unit. All the other 717 models I have seen have six knives. What advantages does the 8 knife have other than a finer cut? How much hp is a 717 capable of handling?

Nathan, from fatory, the 717's were 9 knife machines. To be honest, I did not know you could turn a 9 knife machine into an 8 knife machine. The newer 718 could be made into an 8 knife machine. That is a new one to me. Would you please count the knives again? The 717 was rated up to 90HP. Steve

Yes one is six knife other one could be nine. A friend also had a six knife. 8 or 9 knife machine has expanded metal screens missing from drum shaft slots so I figured it was the oddball. What years were these machines produced?

Nathan, just to confirm, the 717 and S717 were 9 knife machines. They could be turned into 6 knife machines, but not 8. They were made in the mid to late 60's. Steve
