I've found a 336 in middlin' decent shape at a MF dealer for $1500. They took it in on trade for a Hesston inline.

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this baler?

The dealer seemed to think it may have knotter troubles (they brought it straight out of the field, where it had missed quite a few bales), but from the looks of it, a good cleaning and greasing might take care of that. If not, is this a difficult machine to make adjustments on? And do they make a good bale (shape, density, consistency)? I'd like to be able to run behind it with an accumulator or a stack wagon.

Is $1500 a good price for a not-too-terribly beat up baler? I'm thinking about making an offer tomorrow

Dave I have a NH 273 a JD24T and a 336. I bought the JD336 for $1800 the NH for 800 and the 24T for 300. I had a guy at the local JD dealership time and replace parts on both of my JD balers. ( he has worked on JD balers for about 20 years). I have not missed a bale on either since then. I have never seen a bannana bale come out of either one of them. The cost was about $400 a piece to have them worked on. Which has paid for itself, no down time. I just don"t have the time to put into it and it was easier to let him do it. I bought my 336 with a kicker on it from a local dairy farmer. I sold the NH to a friend and he has no problems with it. Adjustments are a given but a properly maintained (new parts) and timed bale should not have any problems. I would offer a dealer about 75% of what he is asking.

I bought a 336 this spring to replace my old 14T and it is the balingest baler I ever saw. I drop on the ground and pick up with a NH1034 stack wagon and have hade no problems. Only missed about 6 bale out of 2500 all summer.I can not seem to get enough hay into this baler. I run any where from 3 to 4 mile an hour ground speed. A little fast but when you are droping on the ground who cares as long as every thing works. the people I bought it from said they had trouble baling straw behind a 30' head combine but I think it was because they hac to small of a tractor on it.

336 is a very good older model baler.I have owned one since 1972 when they were first introduced. If you have an owners manual and follow the directions they are easy to adjust or repair.

i picked one up last spring for $2000 and that was a steal....$1500 is definetly ok. mine was in fine tune and threw 5000 bales this summer. it only missed about a dozen. the previous owner had the knotters rebuilt by a JD dealer the fall before and the bill was only a couple hundred. bales are very consistent and easy to adjust. sounds like a heck of a buy to me. any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

Bought one this summer for... hmm, I think 2100$ Canadian. It wasn't knotting but with the owners manual I just went through it and adjusted everything and it didn't miss a bale after that.

I've never fixed a knotter before so that wasn't too bad.

I found it pulls very nice, slight tendancy to banana bales but maybe a haydog or resistor plate isn't working/missing.

It will pack a rock bale if needed but we are selling to horse people.

I did the same thing, but I love the Hesston. I don"t want to go back to the 336 and the #30 ejector. I do miss the gear-drive knotter, but the 4550 trails better on slopes, transports easier, bales faster (because there"s no throwing cycle to mess up with the continuous-running belt thrower), and cleans up the fine stuff in the 2nd and 3rd cut windrows better than the 336 ever did.

tim,you are most likey right I have been useing the336 for 20yrs and never gave the hesston a chance.maybe next year i'll use the hesston and give it a good work out. I use a 1/4 turn and stack wagon so throwing cycle does not slow me down. stu

slight tendancy to banana bales

How slight is "slight?" not trying to sound like an idiot, but bale shape is a concern.

I'm fond of NH balers, but I've had problems with banana bales for a while. A lot of tinkering by my brother finally took care of it in our 273, but I'm not sure I want to spend a lot of time adjusting and tinkering with this JD should I buy it.

Which leads me to another question; what kind of baler will make the most consistant bales with the least amount of tinkering and adjustment? An inline?

Get you a NH 570 and it will run circles around that 336 or any other make baler and be consistent every time if it is kept up right. Several people around here have bought JD balers (square) and have had nothing but trouble and they want me to fix them and I tell them that they should of listened and bought NH. But the reason they do is because we have 3 good JD dealers wihin 50 miles,so I understand that. But like I tell them all square is red and round is green. I like the green ones the best for round balers so I am not trying to start no kind of color wars. HTH

Re the 'nanna bales, it could be just missing a hay resistor or the dog isn't working. It didn't have any problems after the knotter got adjusted so I didn't have the hay cleaned out to see the problem.

It baled... hmm, 4000 bales or so I think this summer and I broke or lost a string 4 bales I think? 3 or those 4 where too soft as I was cleaning up scraps around the field.
