Has anyone had experience with the Genesis Tillage Gen-Till aeration implement or similar implements.
I really want to aerate my pasture, but find there prices out of my reach. I have 35 hp 4 wd tractor and would like some kind of spike or plugger aeration but all my local inquiries have resulted in the "why would anyone do that" reponses. I live in eastern WA state and it's pretty sandy soil, but will get pretty compacted and hard over time. The local rental places do not have any aeration implements for rent or for that matter any kind of implements to rent. Is there any thing a hobby farmer can do to aerate his pasture on a small budget? bl

Give some serious consideration to the "Why would you want to do that?" question. I'd get a soil test (especially pH). A bit of fertilizer and maybe lime will probably help a lot more than poking holes in it.

1. Rolling as I do, cuts the runners on coastal bermuda which causes the runners to grow roots and a new plant is formed. Really brings old pastures to life.

2. Allows the fert a place to hide so that the spring rains don't run it all off into the creek.

Byron, are you after deep aeration or surface compaction? I am sold on the Aerway aerator, we have a small one here at the golf course for greens and I have 2 big ones on order now. They can be set up with SHATTER TINES OR SPORTS TINES. The shatter tines really are more aggressive but do wonders up to 7" deep. I found one like this and it can be rented in Colo for 250.00 per day, sounds kinda high but with tine wear and the acres you can cover with low HP it's not bad. As Indydirtfarmer said core aeration is the best for thatch reduction or soil layering, etc, if you can find one to rent, and if it's like here you can't keep the big ones running, very self destructing and RPM VS speed is very critical.

Just another idea here for you to ponder,
Bob

Find an old rotary hoe put wheels on a solid shaft add weight and you got a cheap tool for this job

I agree with all of the respondents, but really lean heavily to LeLand"s idea because it has worked so well for me.I have both sandy and clay soils to work.Found a 14 foot field cultivator at auction, very reasonable price. This thing has worked wonders in not only breaking crust in sand but I have broken the hard clods of clay and leveled out furrows left behind from disc harrow. The machine, in addition to the many spider wheels also is fitted with shanks which originally carried cult.shovels.I fitted these w/improvised vertical sharpened knives made from used automobile leaf springs. It works well on pasture land.It is however a heavy pull for a 50 HP tractor due to it"s size.If you are able to find a larger machine than needed just remove as much of it as necessary.

That's why I like the rolling solution. Rolling is much less drag than pulling a knife.

I use the back gang of an 8' JD tandem disc. Welded a tongue on it and made some 400# concrete blocks (one each side outta sacrete). Works pretty good in heavy clay. In loam would probably go to the axles. Yeah!

Might find an old disc that someone would just give you.

I welded the blades parallel fore and aft so it would only cut, not plow and throw dirt. Sharpened the discs with a grinder.

Contact someone at a local golf course. That is a routine operation on golf courses. We have a couple plug aerifiers here at our course. We also contract for greens aerification 2 times a year. It does wonders on sandy soil. John

Byron,

I've seen guys using chisel points spaced about 3 to 4 apart, knifing it as deep as it would dig and going fairly slowly.

Looks pretty rough for a time, but I guess it works, I dunno.
