JD 148 Loader on 1066 ???

A friend has recently quit farming as has offered me a good deal on a JD 148 loader in very nice shape...I would like to put it on my 1066 but ive never done such a thing....What type of mounts do i need??? what should i look for??? maybe its not possible???? but i belive it is....Thanks for the help

I've had a 148 loader on my 3020 since the late 70s. There are no reinforcements inside the side rails of the tractor. If you want to mount that loader on another tractor, using the original mounting brackets, you need to compare the width of the tractor to the brackets you have on the 148. If the width is the same, then you need to find mounting holes that you can use, or drill new ones. The biggest drawback to the 148 is that it hangs on the side frames of the tractor, instead of being anchored to the rear axle. Loaders should push from the rear axle, not the side frames. I rebuilt mine many years ago, with four inch, reinforced channel iron, back to the axle. No problems since then. On a 3020, it is typical to break off the engine mounting bolts when using that loader. The 4020 has four rear mounting bolts, and has fewer problems. Most 148 loader, used for typical farm manure loading, have broken side frames- the 2x2 square tubing that goes forward from the side of the engine, towards the radiator. It is a design problem- you simply can't hang that much weight on the side of the engine- you need to transfer it to the rear axle.

Apparently you are missing those reinforcment pieces, they are basically a piece of thick flat iron that fits inside the frame rails on the engine side, and the mounting bolts go all the way through. If yours are missing, you need to find, or make, some.

Its easy to miss getting the side bar reinforcement plates. That's why I mentioned them. They are demanded by the 148 manual.

I mis-read your post regarding side rails. I thought you meant reinforcements that went between the engine and the tractor frame. Indeed, there is a heavy plate between the loader side frames that ties everything together. That sub-frame is well built. For some pix of my modification to tie into the rear axle, go to the JD archives. Posted some there last winter.

The JD 148 loader bolts to the side rails alongside the engine. On JD tractors there's a reinforcing piece that goes inside those side rails. If the 1066 is the same with as the JD tractors, probably the hole spacings will be wrong. If the 1066 is a different width, then it gets more difficult.

The 148 loader comes without a valve to use the tractor remotes or with a valve and then it needs a source of hydraulic power and return. If its on a JD of similar vintage, its set up for closed center if it has its own valve and I don't know what the 1066 hydraulics are.

You need a manual for it to guide you.

I believe it is possible also, might require a bit of modification to the mounting brackets and again it may not. Go take a look at how it is mounted on his tractor, do some measuring and looking. I'll bet it will work.
