Ag-tronic generator Parts?

I recently got my hands on an Ag-tronics 27 kW generator. I would like to change the oil in the gear box would 80w90 work? The 110 outlets work but I don't have anything to test the 220. I would like to wire my house and shed to be able to connect to the generator when the power is out. Would a JD 4115 compact utility tractor (24hp) be enough tractor to handle the bare neccesties of a house during times of no electricity? Any other input would be great. Thanks in advance.

The double-throw transfer switch that Gerald mentions is an absolute necessity- especially if you are on REA service. They will, and should, disconnect anyone who runs a generator without one. Linemen don't deserve surprises when working on a line that is supposed to be un-energized. Have your electrician install the switch at the meter pole/box, with the appropriate plugs for your generator to hook to. Our dairy needed a 25/45kw unit to start and run 10hp motors, and while 30-50 hp tractors could run it on small jobs, the 70hp kept it operating smoothly when the big motors kicked in. For household use, you need to generate only enough to handle the load, so a smaller hp tractor will do fine. The applied load determines the hp requirement, not the max size of the generator.

Wire it through an official transfer switch. Anything else could kill a lineman trying to fix the downed wires.

It takes only a couple KW to run refrigerator, freezer and furnace, 5 KW to start them. Electric range and electric clothes dryer take a lot more.

My Onan 5 KW gets along with a 21 hp engine, but then it was intended to run on producer or coal gas that was relatively low quality and it couldn't produce that amount of power without the extra displacement. Which means on gas its kind of thirsty, though I put in an adjustable main jet and weaned it down to about a half gallon an hour. Likely your tractor won't do so well. Most 5 KW generators these days run with a 10 hp gas engine.

Don't leave out the transfer switch.

Hypoid oil (80W90) has a distinctive odor especially when heated. Take a sample out of the gear box and warm it up to see if it has that odor. If it does then you need that for replacement, otherwise I'd be more tempted to go with 50 weight engine oil or maybe 15 w40 diesel oil. No use using lots of power to stir stiff oil. My latest truck manual transmission uses automatic (Mercon) transmission oil. The one before that used SAE 50 engine oil. If those are good enough truck transmissions, they are probably good enough for a generator gear box.

Does anyone know where to find the 100 MFD 200 VDC capacitor for a 7 KW AG TRONIC model 517003. I've searched with no direct answers. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!
