Does a Green (Flail) Chopper have any 'lift'?

I am wondering if the blades on the old green choppers have any lift or vacuum action to them? If they have lift or created a bit of suction, then it seems they would be able to pick-up and chop leaves that were piled along the curb in our little town. We currently pay quite a bit of money to have a landscaper do this with his front mount mower and a small leaf vac trailer. If the green chopper would work, we could shred the leaves and blow them into a regular chopper wagon. Thus getting the job done much quicker. Anybody have any thoughts on this? could this concept work with modification? I know the Mathews Company has a PTO driven leaf vacuum and it seems to use the same flail blade concept for pickup. Thx!

You bet they will lift. In certain conditions, they will blow snow. They will pick up leaves, but they will leave some behind. They will also blow leaves out in front, but the real trouble comes when you find something solid in the leaves like a rock or a branch or even a pop bottle. When you launch some thing against the neighbour's Buick, it's really moving. So be super careful, Lord forbid someone gets hurt and check your liability insurance.

Good Luck

I've thought of this to get bedding material for beef shed. My though was an old direct cut head with the sicklebar replaced with a heavy rubber strip, like a dustpan, any thoughts.

Yes, they do create a certain amont of lift. It would still leave behind a certain amount, but your lawn mower could easily take care of what's left. We've used the green chopper to pick up straw after the combine before, worked pretty good.

Don,

Don't you think, however, that with leaves, the gizmo wuold just blow them away and out in front of the knives?

Well, at this time of year if we would green chop in a feild next to the woods, it would suck the leaves right in, no breeze to blow them around. Also one other guy mentioned using them to blow snow-- My dad tried this when I was about 3 or 4. Said it worked good until he got stuck in a huge snow bank.

Well that is the $64,000 question, would it suck them up or would there be a breeze created by the rotation that would blow them from in front of the knives. I was hoping someone had tried it. I guess I'll have to test the theory myself. Now if I can only find one to borrow...
