How'd you guys do? I have about 300 left is all.
2nd cutting was crap this year for me.
Sold another 150 today. Looks like it may be a good spring market here in MN again. I think I may try to hold onto my last 300 till May. I bet they get back into the $4 range again.
Hard as heck to do that though. Bird in hand thing you know.

First year haying, greenhorn hobby farmer with just a few acres and pretty old "multicolor" equipment (MF35, NI-30 (?) sickle, Ford 503 rake, JD214WS baler). Southeast Washington... expect to do 6th cutting this coming weekend if the weather holds as it looks like it will. We don't get much rain in Eastern WA, and with just a few acres, pretty easy to get it in between rare showers and irrigation cycles. One cutting got a few minutes of very spotty rain early in the summer, the rest conpletely dry. All grass hay, sold by the ton to a horse owner/boarder neighbor at $100/ton. Yield was low since I'm just learning about fertilizing. The 5th cutting had a little foxtail, but still acceptable, and the buyer was delighted with the quality of all the rest. Looking forward to improving yield next year. Looking foreward to a winter of equipment upkeep with a little less enthusiasm! :)

Well first cutting we round baled 200 acres of wheat, cut it just after it headed, makes great beef cow hay! On top of that we baled 2500 of our regular hay (alfalfa, alfalfa and grass, and grass) in small squares and the rest was rounds, 270 acres all together. Second cutting was a nightmare. Didn't actually get much ruined but a lot did get rained on just after being mowed and then the humidity was so high it just didn't dry. 3rd cutting was the same way. Yields are good though. Did get a 4th cutting on about 100 acres, was the best drying weather all season! We have 12000 squares of high quality hay in one barn, 4000 in another and I don't even know how many rounds! 470 acres of first cutting, 270 of second, 270 of third and 100 of 4th makes a lot of hay! We have been selling it for $3.50-$3.75 delivered for the squares. Sold some good rounds for $80-$100 a ton. We did sell quite a bit off the wagon all year for around $3. Now if we can just get rid of it all in time.

I too had high hopes after a rainy summer. I think we had too much cool, cloudy weather as the hay was short. I think not enough sun to make it grow. We didn"t get 1/2 of what we got last year and not only that, but the stupid thistles were really thick. I mowed around the patches and lost some hay doing that but the customers don"t like them in the hay. Maybe next year. Oh, my old 14T only missed one knot this year.

I am real happy with the 14t I got this summer. Old as the hills but sure pounds out the bales.
I got it as a back up for my NH68 and sure enough busted a chain on the 68. Pulled the 14t out and havent bothered to fix the 68 yet.
Next year it will be interesting to see what one gets taken out 1st.

Hey Kelly,

I don't know if this ought go be a separate thread, but in as much as you have both a NH 68 and a JD 14T, both I gather about the same vintage, can you give us your thoughts as to how they compare? Likes, dislikes, how their design's are different and bale quality.

I really enjoy your web site - it would be great to see some 14T pics in action!

Well Here in western PA

Allot of rain. I can't complain, had the time and help to bale 10 % more than last year, looking to cut very little 5th cutting, about 250 3-4 cutting , 150 alalfa mix 3rd. if the deer don't eat it all. If we can, if it get wet I'll feed it to the cows. Or fence some of it in,

Price is good, not great, but there is so much rained on hay cheap, and the horse people are using it. SO THEY THINK THEY ARE AHEAD, some of it I would not feed to my cows, They would look at me like, what is this LOL they know the better stuff is in the mile LOL. A little spoiled.

3000 Bales 170 got rained once , 40 junk
60 tons or so

1st off the field 1.25- 1.50 If good hay customer 50-75 more to deliver all cuttings

2nd off the field 1.75-2.00

3rd - 4th off the field 2.00

Allot of field not cut at all. Any good alalfa hay should be 140-180 / ton most baled too late. 2nd cut was good but 3rd was only 20 / Acre .

Hay that got rain on 1.00- 1.25 and tons of it. At auctions there is about 80% rained on hay and the other is too green and need to be feed ASAP.

I figure it cost me around .75 to make a bale of hay. I try my best but still hard, and yes horse customers are a pain some times.

Did about 3700 small square dodging the rain all the way. Started two weeks late and finished over 3 behind. Only one cut in my area. Prices remain low $1.50 out of the field but every one was happy to get it, a lot of hay never got made in this area because of the weather. The machinery held up well. Purchased a new to me Ford 5610 4wd during haying made baling onto wagons much more pleasant than all that weight pushing my old 3600 around. Got to try out a friends CIH 8520 inline baler, nice piece, makes very consistant bales, easy for customers to handle. Me thinks I might have to come up with the asking price. All in all a good year, no injurys, no major breakdowns. Back at it the last weekend in June 2005, the Good Lord willing. Take care. Roy

I can remember better years..... ..and not too many worse.
I started off this year with high hopes. last August, I got a new round baler, and bought a good "back-up" square baler. Got a couple more wagons, and 2 more rakes. I finally worked out all the bugs in my accumulator....READY and waiting...
Spring hit with a SPLASH! Rain every few days. We didn't get any cut hay rained on...We couldn't even get it cut. Everything went weeks beyond "ripe". Then when we did get to start cutting, the ground was saturated,and the humidity was awefull. The "second cutting" was poor at best. Most of my crop was stunted from not cutting in time earlier in the year. We did get SOME 3rd cutting, but not much. I'm about 4500 bales behind the previous years total. What I do have is just about all sold. Looks like I won't be out loading hay in the January cold.
I've got about 75 round bales left. Most of that is promised out already. We did OK on wheat straw. I sell quite a bit of that too. There's about 2700 bales still in the barn.
Guess this winter will be a good time to do a bit of repair work on the barns, as they will all be emtey. John

Locally I think you'd be hard pressed to find hay that hadn't been rained on. The question is when. Quickly learned from last year to cut just before the rain and bail in-between the rains. I had 1 cutting on 1 field that didn't get any rain, and only lost 2 acres of alfalfa to rain. Watched a neighbor chop and blow 80 acres of timithoy back out as fert just to clean up his hay field. OUCH!

I've been moving quite a few bales considering the season. I dont discount, period. $3.00 a bale and up for 100 bale lots, self loaded, self hauled. Rolls for $20 and up. Right now got 550 rolls dry (in the barn) and 350 wrapped. Few over 4000 squares left. At this pace I'll be sold out by late January.

Sold out all I had extra. Have requests for spring if I want to do it. Frankly a little tired of the June weather here and probably will not bother with cutting any extra for resale. Horse people commit to a certain number of bales and then take only a small percentage of what they committed to. All the time walking out in the field telling me why it is no good and then trying to run the price down. They eventually buy it, of course, because it is great hay and there is no other around. It's great fun up until the buyers show up. Answer to your question? Took two cuttings only. Sold the entire first load for $3.25 off the field. Sold the second for $4.00. Kept about 50 around for my kids to feed there pets. Spent several fine days on the field.

Hay up here in Michigan is selling quite well. We had so much rain that few people got any put up without it getting wet once or twice. A long dry spell in September made third cutting very good. Square Bales run from 2.00 - 3.50, some to $4. My first and second went into round bales and that will be enough for my beef cows. Only 3rd cutting went into squares. I haven't sold any yet but plan to take some to the auction next week. Except for the square bales, I contract most of the work. $15 per acre to have someone disc-bine and $7 per bale for net wrapped 4x5 rounds. I only had to rake. This seems cheap enough that for 15 acres, I can't buy the equipment. (although I miss some of the "fun".)

Seems there is hay everywhere here in MO. It is not hardly worth (IMHO) baling as you can buy it so cheap. A fellow I know said he was at an auction recently where square bales sold for $.80/bale. That would not pay the fuel, labor, and wear and tear to bale it in my opinion. I only baled about 500 squares. I tried to sell out of the field as I do not have much help to handle the bales, with no luck, so I stopped cutting. Most everyone I know had hay left over from last year in this area.
