I have two sicle bars for my JD #5 amd need to know how to sharpen them, or do I even need to?
I know that the knifes with straight edges need sharpen, however, only serrated edges are available here and I know nothing about there upkeep.
Thanks

Chuck

Serated ledger plates with a smooth sickle is the best way to go for cutting varried hay.

Top serated is ok if you only cut coarse stemmed stuff. It gums up with fine stems, doesn't clear out.

Bottom serated work pretty good. Works great with smooth ledger plates.

Can't sharpent top serated, can with the other 2 styles.

i use the under serrated sections and i do touch them up from time to time with my dewalt 4 1/2" grinder with a cutting disc in it. a regular grinding disc is to thick.

Serrated sicle blades aren"t made to sharpen. They will stay sharp for the life of the blade.I have had one get a good nick in it and brush it up with a grinder. But it will shorten the life of it and you will have to keep sharpen it.If you are cutting grass it wn"t cut as good.Cutting Sudan grass or sorgrum it will be ok...But you will have to slow down some,so it won"t overrun and skip over it.I have cut many hours on swather(30 circles a year).I have found that if you buy a cheap sicle it won"t last.I have tried all brands.I have found that New Holands will out last all.Keep it out of the dirt is the best solution..

You bet!

If we are down to sharpening sickle sections, we've got entirely toooo much time on our hands.

Just my view,

Allan

The serrated edge grabs the grass much better for cutting than the slick ones. I have effectively sharpened them even to the point of cutting the serrations off. I use a little 4" grinder from HF tools for $19 on sale.

I have sucessfully sharpened under-serated blades (grooves are on bottom of blade) with a 4" angle grinder being very careful. I do not think you could sharpen the top-serated blades. I also run a JD #5 for mowing hay.

Hello, we have all over-serated knifes, a neighbour was try to tell us to flip them when we reinstall to make it work better?

Is it actually a differnt knife?

Sickle knives come in over or under serrated. Flipping them over will render your mower useless, wonder where your neighbor has been all his life. His field must be the one that looks like it was combed instead of cut. The under serrated knives are made to sharpen but not the over. Keep the bevel on the top in all cases. It is just as important to keep the ledger plates in the guards sharp too. They can be ground with an angle grinder. Ledger plates also come serated or plain. You can sharpen the serated ones too but they won't be serated any more.Keep your hold downs adjusted too. Good luck Ed

Farmered,

I don't think he had actually done it before, only been told to by others! I think he was hoping we would try it!
