I got my 542 for free and had to put about $300 into it (so far). It bales better than my MF124 but only if I'm careful to make my windrows consistent. If one of my windrows is too skimpy, the baler doesn't pack well and I wind up with a very loose bale. It seems to like a big mouthful!

great baler! you 'll be happy with it.

the packer arms run in nylon/delrin/plastic blocks and mine are sloppy now, will need to get replacements made by a machine shop.

The 542 was the last generation of baler that Ford made. The 532/542 was an improved version of the 530 that Ford started to manufacture in the early 60"s. The 542 came out in the early 70"s and was built until Ford bought New Holland in 1986. After that they discontinued the Ford line of balers for the New Holland line for obvious reasons.

The 542 is a good baler that will work well with small HP tractors. It uses the same style of knotter that JD and NH use, the Rasspe style. It is a fairly high capacity baler that fairly simple to work on. $600 is not that bad a price for one in this part of the country. I saw a 532 in perfect shape sell for over $1600 at a sale earlier this summer. It has not been a factor yet but it is a step child of the new CNH and I don"t know how well they will continue to support.

Here is the FBBA website that has a couple of the 542s on it. Go to the photo album and check out JimUT with his. He can give you some comparisons with a MF 124 and Garry of East TX can give you some comparisons of the 542 verses a NH 273. Let us know if you get it

I purchased an Ford 540 for $150. It needs some work on the pickup tin, ready to go to work. It is PTO driven. Paint is fair but origional and all decals are readabel. Forgot, I had to replace the tires. Towed it home abour 300 miles at 55mph.
Towed real good, dident know it was there. All I had was the farm dimond and tail lights. Suprised that no cop's bothered me as it was nine feet wide.
