Just went outside and looked at my rake. It's a NH 256. The bars have cast ends, cast as part of the bar. One end of the bar bolts to the star on the forward side, the other end aft.

Right in the center of the casting nuckle on the bar (that holds the bearing)is where I drilled, tapped, and installed the zerks. Twas some other time that I encountered the flat plates on other machines.

Go get em.

Hey, thanks Mark. If I understand you right, the holes you drilled are exactly opposite the threaded shaft that sticks out of the ball, Right?
That was my first inclination, but never had to tear one apart, and mine don't look like the want to come apart very bad, so wanted some one who'd been there to share their information. Think mine will have zerks before next season. It's a dandy rake, and I don't want any down time for new bearings! Ray

Last year I replaced all the bearings in both my rakes and put grease fittings in exactly where txblu describes. Only difference is I put them in while the bearings were out. Not as bog a job as I thought it would be, main thing was HEAT!. Put a nut on the end of the bolt, put nut in vice, heat up the cast end to cherry red and tap bar off bearing.

Sir, you have pinpointed the exact location. Just drill till you're through the casting and stop.

Good luck.

Put the zerk in B4 the rains hit. Will keep this season's water outta dare which could be the decisive blow as to whether or not you have to replace the bearing later.

Every time I grease mine, and it has sit out, rained and all, I press water out of the joint.

Thanks again Mark, mine gets a bye for the winter - gets to sleep in a nice dry barn, already in for the winter. But she's gonna get it before next season. Can't begin to guess how long she set out behind father-in-law's barn before I rescued it. Probably amazing thet none of the bearings have let loose in the two seasons I've had it. And to kyhayman, thanks for your information too - wondered what was involved in putting in a new bearing - don't really want to go there if I don't have to!
