What is the difference in these mowers? I've seen both mentioned. I'm looking at a model 9 my neighbor has that has been in storage the last 10-12 years. Looks ok except the bar is a little rusty. Anyone have a owners manual for a model 9?

I have a #9 and it works very well on my Ford tractor. There was a guy last week who had a chance to buy 2 #9 mowers for $100 each. How much is your mower going to cost? Just curious. I certainly wouldn't part with my mower for $100.

A 9W has longer linkage and pitman so that the inside shoe is out farther. 9w and 8w were built that way so guys could use them on row crop tractors without moving wheels in. I use a 8w with my 430 JD, tires aren't out all that far but it works fine. If you get one though the pitman is different from the 9. The number 9 is an excellent mower and is 3 point mount. It requires some stiffener or sway brackets that hook to 3 point so be sure to get those also. If in storage probably the cutter bar just has surface rust that will clean off. You can gt an operator's manuel from JD publications. Parts book is same for 8, 8w, 9 9w.

Ebay will also have manuals floating around that will be about half the price if you catch the right auction. Surface rust on bar will burnish to a really nice tone when you use it. No worries.
