I just bought a 605-G at a auction that is serial #130 that has a few new welds and seem to be in pretty decent condition as I know next to nothing about round balers. Is this a pretty good baler for a Amateur Round Baler Man? It has manual tie, is it possible to convert to hydraulic without too much cost? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks, Kent

Thanks for the replies, that is exactly what I was looking for. I want to put it to work before I sink some more money into it if all possible. It will probablly be next season before I can add the extras. I will shop my dealer for spare parts and give Hay Dr. a call about the hyd. tie. I had better be safe than sorry and shop for a bigger extinguisher. Thanks again for the help. Kent

Go to your local dealer and if they are like us they probably have old Hyd. ties that they swapped out for electrics. Every one else has given you good info.

I have a Massey Ferguson 1440 which is the same baler. I've had it for over 12 years with only normal repairs, mostly roller bearings and pickup teeth wich are steel on mine. It's a good baler, but like the others said, you can plug it up if you don't let the bale start. Mine has an electric tie but the hydraulic is more trouble free. There is a also a flow control to set the tie rate for the arm. I usually buy Vermeer parts because they are cheaper than the ones with a MF label.

We have some of those used Hydraulic twine ties available. Call 423-282-6969 ask for Billy Lee. Be ready to get an education he's a bit long-winded.

That should be a good basic baler. Very similar to the 605F or H, except you don"t have hydraulic tension on the belts. There are several keys to baling success. First the hay must be dry enough. This series of baler will plug or wrap hay around rollers if the hay is not dry enough. Second is to be sure the core forms. Get hay across the entire bale chamber right away. Push in the clutch if you need to, but don"t drive ahead until you see the hay get sucked into the chamber and form the core. Drive ahead, alternately filling one side, then the other until the bale is complete. Tie, dump and repeat.

Converting to hydraulic tie is simple. Go to a wrecker and get the cylinder, hoses and the cushion valve. The cylinder mounts should be already on the twine tie mechanism.

Use genuine Vermeer teeth if you use rubber mounted teeth. They are stiffer than the aftermarket ones and that means a lot when it comes to forcing the hay into the chamber to start the bales. You will need a 1 1/2 spherical bearing on hand. They go. See my posts a week back. Also have a big fire extingusher on your tractor.

Good luck with your new baler!

John
