Looking at buying a 6foot 8 inch disc mower. I have looked at both of them. Which one do you guys like better? Both are about the same price.
Thanks!

The new Hesstons are the same as the New Idea, both Agco cookie cutter products with different decals and paint. I've had a New Idea for 3 year, my dad has had them since the late 80's. Great mowers.

In the 1980 and early 1990's Lely made the New Idea disc mower cutterbars. About 1993 New Idea started producing a cutterbar under its current patent and design.

Were the Lely's the grey ones? I know we wore four of those out in short order (seemed good at the time). The red ones are a much better mower, got a 5408 in 1994. It has done as much work 3 times over as the grey one did. Then added another 5408 in 2000.

I think you would be satisfied with either brand. If these are new units both are shaft driven.

New Holland does make their own disc mower, it is manufactured in Grand Island, Nebraska where a lot of the hay equipment is made for the midwest. The combines are also assembled there also. Tours are available anytime. Purchase the New Holland, you will be much happier and won't have as many problems. Like everyone says, NH is #1 in the hay business.

Hi, Are you looking at new or used. Some manufactors have used kuhn's at different times, so their can be big differences between new and old. New Holland and John Deere don't always make their equipment. Bill

I don't know much about hay equipment but folks around here say New Holland is the Cadillac of hay tools.

I have never used a hesston disc mower, but was disapointed with the hesston haybine and round baler that I used to use. Both were replaced by New Holland, and the New Hollands work much better.

New Holland used to use the Kuhn cutter bar on older machines. These were a 1-piece design and cost a lot to repair I'm told.
