How do I remove the flywheel on a JD #5 sickle mower. It appears to have a splined shaft and a rectangular key, but it just laughed at my 8" gear puller. Thanks.

The key is tapered. You need to tap the flywheel in and get the key loose, then pull the key out. This will then allow the flywheel to be removed. Some have drilled and tapped a hole in the key and put a small bolt in to get a better grip on the key.

It is smooth shaft with keyway. I usuall tap the back where you can get to it, with big hammer. Whe moves foreward a bit tp it back and will usuall loosten key some. Large puller, tighten, rap on center bold of puller, tighten again. Maybe some heat near center.

Not sure how it is put on, but any puller job, when you tighten up the bolt, whack it with a BFH- helps to loosen the part.

LOL, I take it a "BFH" is simular to the "BFW" that we used to use on the F-111 sway brace nuts to tighten them when we installed AME or munitions on the wing weapons pylons.

For those of us unused to the technical terminology of the mechanical world, would "BFH" by any chance be an acronym for " Big F****** Hammer"?

Could be anything from 'fat', or if it is around Halloween- 'freaking', or anywhere in between. Frustrating might also fit, either when looking for it, or slamming body parts with it.

I just wanted to be sure. I may want to dismantle one of my mowers this fall for restoration. Now, forgive me but I teach at the local college and I am known to be a picker of nits so.....I have a number of BFH's. Do I use my BF(ball pein)H, a BF(claw)H, a BF(dead blow)H, or some other type of BFH? We could refer to these as BFBPH, BFCH, BFDBH, and BF?H. I also have a BFSH (sledge). Not trying to be a BFPITA....or am I? ;-)

Just a guess, now- but at the dinner break, ok, for you it might be 'lunch', but for us it is dinner- do you often have Campbell's Alphabet Soup, or maybe do an occasional side job with the govt?. For your info, my BFH is a muddah- fellow thresher show member criticized me a few years ago because I was using the 12 pounder to put in tent stakes, when he told me an 8 pounder was all I needed. Told him I used to have a 16 pounder that I got from my Dad, but split it in two pieces pounding in a post at home! Actually happened that way! Not shabby for a shorty @ 5 foot 7 1/4.

So that would be a BFSH! Clears that up. I could continue with this all weekend, but duty calls. Every once in a while I get a kick out of being a BF PITA. Appreciate the info, God bless.
