Old fellow has 2 JD #9 sickle mowers and a 14T bailer. Mowers look good including pitman arms. (One is brand new). He"s asking 100.00 each for the No. 9"s (one 6 foot and one 7 foot) and 300.00 for the bailer which has a lot of rust but seems to be loose. Any info out there on this deal. Pro"s and Con"s?
Thanks,
David(Ala)

Depends where you are around here thats a steal. I've seen 14t's bring 6 or 7 hundred at sales.
Dont know any thing about number 9's have a number 5 and like it price seems fair.

The 14T baler dates back to the 50s, and many can be had for $100 or so. Good machine tho. I have a 268NH with the 269 hitch and thrower that I'd certainly sell for $500!

Just for reference, I paid $115 for a new sickle bar (the bar with the knives that slides back & forth, with the head & bearing) for my JD 350 mower. $100 for the whole mower sounds like a bargain! Paid $750 for a NH 268 in rusty but good working condition.

In Texas that would be great buy. In Iowa that might be a little high.

I got my #9 mower for free from my aunt. But it was missing half the driveshaft so I had to make one. That cost me about $100 in parts. It works good and I would never accept $100 for it.

For that price I'd buy them both just to have the spare parts. Pitman sticks are still available from the JD dealer for about $12-$15. Lots of guys make their own. Here's a hint: buy or make a spare pitman stick and put it on the shelf. That will guarantee that the one on the mower will never break! Plus, a pitman stick will never break unless you're using it and need it NOW. You can save lots of down time by having a spare stick on the shelf. Of course, if you have a complete spare mower maybe you don't need a spare stick.

good price on the mowers but unless the baler is in good working order it maybe high. In my area most mowers like that sell for 300 plus but a 14T is very old and they don't sell for much unless they work good.

I think the mowers are a little on the high side too. I'd make him a lower offer or check out the auctions.

I paid 400 for a JD 14T earlier this summer and had to put new chains and a bearing on it to get it working, total of about $ 100.

The JD #9's seem to be a great buy at $100, I would love to find one for that price. I paid $150 for an IH 100 balance mower 7' sickle that works good, bought that a couple months ago.
