My dad never taught me nothing, other than as you stated about straight line plowing, and turning out to the right and back in to the furrows at the corners, which I dont do now anymore as it causes washing. I had to learn how to plant, drill, and mow and rake on my own as my dad had no use for me as a kid and used my younger brother and left me at the house for mom to use. When I mow, with a simi mounted #27 IHC sickle mower 7ft, I drive past the corner to where my bodys even with the line of the hay next to be cut, then I turn, somwhat, but not to sharply. You dont want the end shoe of the mower backing up as this can be hard on the sickle bar if it digs in. A wheel fixed on the outer shoe would correct this. With a turn like this, you will leave a bit of grass every time. I usually do this X amount of times, then come out of the hay, raise the bar, drive to where I can pick uop the tufts of hay ive left standing lower the bar and cut them going right into the next line of hay. I do that at each corner, then return to making 45@ turns with the bar down. I dont like hearing the mower chatter ever time I come to a corner, and youll hear it much more oftener on a 3 acre field than on a 30 acre field, and so it gets a bit annoying. I dont mow enough hay to get used to it, and it always sounds like it is threatening to go to heck when I lift it on the corners. I could throw it out of gear, and should, but, on a short turn, with putting it back in gear before lowering it. oits harddly worth the effort, and does take time
