I found a 1996 Dodge 3500 truck for sale. It is a 4x4 chassis cab with attached 12' stake rack. It has a 360 engine and automatic transmission. The truck has reasonably low miles and looks to be in excellent shape. I am not at all familar with Dodge products thus my following questions. I would plan on hauling hay, small square bales, plus at times pull my 2 axle trailer loaded (around 10000 total combined load). Other items would be pulling bale baskets between fields, machinery and spreaders. Would the 360 engine be large enough to handle the loads? The truck would see about 7-9000 miles per year, with most of the loaded miles generally in the 50-100 mile range. I do not know the rear gearing, is there something I should specifically look for? I currently use my 1990 HD Ford F250 pickup with a 460 engine, no problems but liked the 12' rack and 4WD on the Dodge. Thanks in advance for any information.

I've read all comments, and would add that if it's 4x4, then it's got granny low and could move anything you'd care to pull...but stopping that load is different.

My old '84 Ford is just a 300 6 cyl, and I've never been able to load it so heavily that I could move it...it's just gearing.

If it's in good shape and cost is reasonable, go for it.

I have a 360 in a 77 dodge 4x4 with a auto tranny and a 99 4x4 with a 360 and auto tranny plus a 79 with 318 and auto....Never had any trouble with them at all...they all have orginal motors and trannys and use them around my farm place for hard work...i had a cummins loved it to death but i just didnt need it... my 360 did everything i wanted it to and was half the price....id say go for it....

I've owned nothing but Dodge's since 1966..... to each his own. Had numerous 360s in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.....never any problem. Would be more concerned with the automatic..... eventually had every one I ever owned torn up (these were farm trucks, loaded and overloaded); finally went to manuals. Don't know if the '96 still uses the 727 or not????? Not sure if I understand the 10,000 lbs.....if that's TOTAL....truck, trailer, load; absolutely no problem; go for it.

The 360 is tough, but not a ford 460. Have both.

I am a dodge guy, but you will find it very underpowered compared to a 460. A Cummins diesel would be a better choice, but also will cost more money to buy.
