There seemed to be a great deal of Green(JD) or Yellow(Vermeer) pride when suggesting a replacement baler for the burned unit. In the Mid 1980s the JD dealer told us that their baler was built by Vermeer, but to JD's specification. Does anyone know if they are still built by Vermeer or does John Deere own a baler factory? I have seen great success with red, green and yellow, good maintenance and an able operator seem to be the key. For the record worn out and trashed can be found in any color. When buying used equipment its current condition and parts availabilty are more important than what they would do fifteen years ago when they were new and you had a dealer 20 minutes away. I wish the fellow well with his replacement baler and a safe conclusion to this season.

JWC,

Vermeer tends to go with small dealers like a farmer who has a Vermeer dealership on the side. This can be very good if you have a knowledgable dealer close to your area. Also parts seem to be cheaper for Vermeer. The advantage to John Deere may be that your nearest dealer is a lot closer than the nearest Vermeer dealer. John Deere seems to always get top dollar for their parts.

Vermeer Dealers in reply to CEB, 09-20-2004 15:01:40
We have sold over 2000 New Vermeer round balers in 31 years and about 1500 used round balers of all makes. We have $200,000 of Vermeer parts in stock today. Find me any 10 JD dealers, total their sales and inventory of parts and they will not even be half the way there. Vermeer dealers on average stock more parts and dedicate more of their resources to keeping the customer running in the field.

Vermeer never made a baler for John Deere. Deere copied Vermeer patent back in the 70's and then lost the patent law suit. Vermeer took the money and built a new assembly plant. The only thing that Vermeer builds for deere is their R-23A double basket rake. I agree with you on your other comments.

James is correct. Vermeer does make many other products for JD & CAT in their industrial divisions.
