I live in San Marcos Texas just south of Austin and have about 15 acres I have chiseled & plowed & spiked tooth Harrowed. They are ready for drilling oats with my John Deere 8300 drill?? Do I put fertilizer out first then plow again & spike tooth harrow again then drill the seed in & how deep do I let the drill disks go into the dirt maybe put some of the spacer on the hydralic ram to let the disk only go a certain depth. Any info for a first time oats planter would be greatly appreciated.

Oats is a shallow seeded, shallow rooted crop. Fertilizer can be applied before the last SECONDARY tillage pass or after seeding the oats. If applied after seeding, use a boss harrow, spike tooth harrow, or tine tooth harrow to work it in to the ground. Consult your drill manual for pressure setting on the openers. There is no need to any spacers on the cylinders- the manual explains the use of cotter keys on the opener arms.

The fertilizer, asuming granular with some N in it, should be lightly worked into the ground within 24 hours of applying it (or a good soaking rain right after you apply it), sooner if you can. The N likes to go away if you don't. It does _not_ need any more plowing, you can either harrow (drag), or just plant over the fert & that will work it in enough. Most anything will work.

There are a lot of options for applying fertilizer. What i usually do is get the ground worked down, spread the fertilizer, and then disc or harrow it in. Then i plant and cultipack. There are probably better methods, but this has worked well for me.

The only way ive ever sowed oats OR wheat, was to plow, disc, drill/fertilize, or fertilize/drill, then pack.
