JD 14T Needle Brake Question

I'm starting to play around with my 14T baler and tripped the knotter. I then grabbed the flywheel and started moving the plunger (it was not stuck -yippee), when the plunger comes back away from the chamber, I get enough resistance to stop any motion and I can't turn the flywheel any further by hand. I think the needle brake is to tight and/or frozen.

Soooo, my question is - should I take the brake loose or should I just spin the flywheel a little harder and let the momentum of it try to break the needle brake loose? Also, how difficult is it to reset the needle brake?

BTW, I have the manual, it's an easy enough read, but I wanted to get some opinions from some of you who have this baler too.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

If you havent already I think I would see that the knotters and every thing will take grease and apply some penetrating fluids to places that do not take grease. sometimes if you are rolling the flywheel in reverse I have noticed a tendency for this to happen for some reason, when it would spin freely by hand in the right direction.

Sid,

There is plenty of grease! If there was one thing the former owner did was keep this think lubed!

I loostened the needle brake and the plunger and knotter complete their cycles.

Thanks!
Bill

There's the NEEDLE BRAKE, a disc with spring-loaded brake pads on it, that puts a certain amount of resistance on the needle and knotter mechanism, to prevent the needles and cradle from flopping around, so the neddles don't get in the way of the plunger, by moving at the wrong time.

Then, there's the PLUNGER STOP, a catch "dog" that swings in the way of the plunger, and stops it, shearing the flywheel pin, anytime the plunger begins to approach the needles, and they are "out of time", and not in the "home" position.

Which is giving you you the problem, the NEEDLE BRAKE, or the PLUNGER STOP?

Hey Bob,

It was the needle brake! I loostened it and the plunger and knotter complete their cycles. BTW, I checked if the plunger stop was coming in and out of the chamber and it is.

Getting myself aquainted with this baler!

Thanks again,
Bill

Page 27 in the JD Operator's manual shows the tension/force setting to create the necessary resistance for the needle frame. The brake plate and/or pad might be causing too much brake effect due to dirt, rust, etc. HTH.

Rob,

It was the needle brake that was frozen - at least to a resistance enough to prevent me from turning the flywheel by hand! I loostened it-up and the plunger and knotter complete their cycles - cool!

Thanks again,
Bill
