Anyone know how to tell the year of a Jd #5 sickle mower?
Where is the serial number?

Nancy, While reading thru my #5 owners manual a while back I was surprised to find out that JD did not put serial numbers on the mowers for the first few years. The book gave the year that serial numbers were added, but, I can't find it now. In other words, yours may not have one.
There is a JD name plate on the left frame of my mower (#5). I've never looked for a serial number as the dealer has never asked for one.
E-mail me if I can help further.
Chuck

Nancy-I'm pretty sure that the mowers were made from 1934-56, which is a long run. They were and are an extremely popular mower. Thank heavens there were so many made because the price would be high if there weren't so many. I think the parts catalog is the best place to look. It will take a fair amount of detective work and some careful charting, but you could come up with a reasonable guess as to year. You can never be sure though, as many machines have been scavenged to repair others and there is always the possibility that you have one of these "hybrids".
It would still be fun to try. Good luck.

Nancy,
I don't think there is a serial number. I have a parts book, & you can determine a time frame from some of the parts, like the style of frame. But I don't think you're going to be able to nail it down exactly.

I went to the JD dealer to get parts they print out a sheet of parts and a picture.
Some of the parts say 1955 and some 1934-1948 Etc.
where the knife head is Z9611 Guide rear,Z5870 plate wearing under knife head, H27363(z9593)Shim
1 used up to 1955: 2 used,1955 and up.
When I put it together the sickle will not move so I think I need the extra shim H27363. But if it's a 1955 then there was part number z9610 plate guide. Can't tell by the picture it's size.
So confused what part to get. That's why I though there was a way to tell the year so I can get the right parts. Thanks for answer.
