How to cutt with Sickle bar mower

How do you cut a field with a sickle bar mower. If it sticks out one side. Do you one "block" at a time going up one side then down the other until that section is done. go around the perimiter then rake to form the rows for bailing...

Just interested, only ever used a bush hog.

same way as with anything else,, one pass counterclockwise around the field to open it up,, then cut clockwise the rest of it,,Jim

You make you first pass counter clockwise then all the rest clock wise based on you mower sticking out to the right.
The way I mow is cut a path down the center of the field then mow counter clockwise from the mowed path. At the end of the row I mow the turn around area then lift my blade on the following turns.

i cut around field for about 3 rounds then cut backcut, if hot and field is big your backcut will be greener that rest of field when comes time to bale if you wait till you finish field .. i round corners ...i use disc cutters now if field is small i cut around it till i get the block small enough then i split the center and cut back and forth on each side of center till it moves out and makes it easy to pickup and go to other side...have nice day may god bless

Jeff,

You have to cut the field in a circle, outside toward the inside.

At some point, you'll have to go back and catch that back-swath, and that's the one that'll drive ya crazy! :>)

The way I learned from the old-timer I bought the farm and tractor from, was to cut the outside swath first, all the way around. Then turn around to cut the rest of the field.
That way you can gauge the width of that outside pass correctly so you don;t end up with some left or having to recut parts of the second swath when you finish; recutting is a good way to get plugged up.

My sickle bar is almost exactly the same width as the tractor, so it's much easier to drive with the wheels right next to the outside. Then come back for the backswath later, and it is automatically the proper distance away from obsticles. If your mower & tractor don't match, I see your point, but it is harder to keep the sickle out of fences, etc.

I start at the edge and go around and around and around then when finished I go back to the fence and mow out the backswath the I ran over with the tractor when I started the first round.

Sid I heard about a fellow neer here a few years ago that mowed his back swath first then just kept mowing that direction, I guess he had a heck of a mess. He wasn't in business, but about 3 years.

I was talking to a college student who hired on a haying crew one summer and his job was to run a Stack cruiser. Said he pulled into a field and the owner was balng with his new baler and had gone around thirty acres without any twine in the baler. Later he was talking to a hay hauling crew who was loaidng on trucks said the guy put the last thirty or so bale on the gound had run out of twine.
