I need to do something about the galvanized roof on my shop. It is 19 years old and is showing a lot of rust, It is coming right through the alumnium asphalt paint I put on it 2 years ago. It has rusted over about 30% of the roof.I was thiking of using a wire brush on an angle grinder than priming it with someting before putting on a finish coat. Any one have any good ideas on this? thanks

Check out a product called Texotropic Fiber Roof Coating. It is made by the Texas Refinery Corp. www.texasrefinery.com

I have had great success with this product. I used it on several old barns I own that have metal shingles. They were rusty (but not flaking) when I applied 1 good coat of this TRC product back in 1991. It is now almost time to do another coat, 13 years later.

It is not cheap, but nothing any good ever is.

Good luck,
Scott Goff

I have been painting all sorts of buildings including a lot of old rust galvanized steel buildings. My choice is use rusoleums rusty iron primer first. Wait a week then you can use what ever you want. I have used good latex paint or oil over it and it works great. I have been doing this for seven years and the first jobs look fine so my feeling is if it lasts seven years and looks like the same as when I painted it the stuff is doint its job. The key is not to put it on new galvanized metal as it won't stick to it.
