OT remove wheel bearing from trailer axle?

Years ago, we picked up a fold out tent camper probably built in the mid '60s, Camel brand. One of the inner grease seals was damaged. Took off grease cap, cotter key, castellated nut, no problem. But was never able to get the bearing off the spindle, to be able to remove the hub,etc. Is there something I'm missing here? Shouldn't the bearing just slide off the spindle? Something else holding it on? Solution has been to just keep the grease gun handy and give the zerk a couple of shots of grease every time it hits the road. Now wife wants to take trailer on cross country trip, Michigan to Rhode Island, so crawling under and greasing it daily is probably not an option! Is there something peculiar about these bearing setups?

Happened to me on a boat trailer. Mechanic said it was frozen to the spindle. He hit it on three sides around the race and it broke away and fell of. If there is no groove on the spindle, the race is likely heat fused or rusted to it. A light touch of 600 emery paper might be in order followed by a new bearing and a good quality of grease. Bearing buddies with zerk grease fitting is also a good addition.

Had a boat trailer with a similar problem. The inner bearing race would not come off the spindle and on closer examination I found that it had spun on the spindle and created an undercut in the spindle before welding itself to the spindle. Ended up cutting the inner race with a Dremel cutoff disc and then spliting it. Replaced the spindle by grinding it off where it joined the axle tube and welding on a new one. These assemblies are not the best quality but rather just enough to get by.

You are missing nothing. Outer bearing must be rusted onto the axle; otherwise rocking of the hub would dislodge it and it would fall out into your hand.

There is a washer between the nut and the bearing that could be binding.

If your rear bearing were stuck to the shaft, you could still get the front off, and with a little coaxing on the wheel (hammer) the rear bearing would remain on the shaft and the wheel hub with rear race would come out. The rear bearing and inside seal would remain on the shaft.
