Removing Needle Bearing Race on MF # 32?

I'm not sure if it's technically a race, but out side part of a needle bearing where the needles run (the inside is exposed and runs on a shaft). Anyway, the bearing died in a bad way, the needles are gone, and the race it pretty well beat up. The problem is that I'm having a heck of a time getting that race out. I've tired to break it out using a small cold chisel but really can't get anywhere and end up hitting the cast housing.

This is the bearing on the lower shaft of a MF # 32 Sickle Mower if that helps explain things...

Thanks,

K

I have a 32, I know the bearing you mean but I'm not sure how it is retained. Is that a two piece casting maybe??? Take out the 4 (?) bolts to separate the two halves???
I'm guessing here, will look at mine in the morning.
Maybe try asking your Massey (Agco) dealer for an exploded parts view.

The cast housing is one peice, so the race has to be pulled out some how. I think if one could get in with a little cutting wheel (dremel?) you might be about to break up the race and yank it out BUT it's not that big of a bearing so there isn't all that much room.

It's be a snap if the bearing didn't die, but then again who removes bearings that are good? :-P

ahhh...I understand now.
I had a similar tricky situation with the end bearing in a Pierce governor, blind hole, I was stumped. Took it to a machinist neighbour, he used an air powered die grinder with a tiny stone to cut the outer 'race'...took him less than a minute.

Disaster....

I got the race out but it took quite a bit of cussing before it finally gave in. I ended up putting a bit of a gouge in the cast, which made me pretty mad, but figured I could file it down and just throw some JB weld in there to make up for the space.

I started to work on the shaft and after a good cleaning I found that it was all buggered up. I think the PO let the bearing go, and then just ran the thing and let it swing around in there at will. I don't even want to know what the shaft it going to cost new. I just called friend to see if it could be built up and turn down so I'll have to see what he finds out.

I don't know why the put a needle bearing in there. Every where else it's a ball bearing.

No lack of frustration here...

Here is the easy way in reply to kopeck, 09-06-2004 18:35:38
If you have a stick welder, ( or a wire feed )weld a bead around the center of the inside of the bearing race. Let it cool for a hour. The weld will shrink and also shrink the bearing race, it should almost fall out without much effort. Very handy way with ball bearings with the guts removed or shrinking out timkin bearing cups.
