Is torque coupling inportant on 315 Bushog brand

I just bought a old Bushog brand 315 fold up rotory cutter and i am trying to get it going,it is missing the rubber torque coupling between the first gearbox and the 3 way splitter Bushog wants $1200 for it can i just put a driveshaft w/ujoint in between it for alot less money?What is the purpose of the 8 rubber disc's?

New Bush Hogs don't have that feature. They use a short driveshaft with two U-Joints and slipclutch between the transfer gearbox and center wing box. Can't imagine why a torsion dampener is used on the center box, and not on the wing boxes. If your Hog uses only one slipclutch on the transfer box input, that makes it easier.

Yes the coupler is definitely there for a good reason. Cant you go without? Yes. But all of the additional vibration can travel both ways. Down the driveline into the gearbox and wear it out quicker. AND, it will force vibration back towards the tractor. Depending on the amount of vibration, you will approach $1200 in u-joints and lost time replacing them all the time. When you get the brush hog to speed, the force of all that steel moving is HUGE. I have seen torsional dampeners used inside motorcycle rims and on cars, to dampen shock to the driveline, clutch dumps etc. In your case, rocks or anything else just below the grass.
If you have good fab skills I would try to make one. Especially for $1200. You would hate to ruin your mower over one part.

I am going to make something because i am not going to spend $1200 on it.I wonder if i could take two yokes and weld a flange on them and put a couple of these rubber tourqe dampers in between them?I only have 10" from inside spline to inside on shafts to get this coupling in.

I'm not familiar with the part you are talking about but I'll venture a guess. My guess is that the torque coupler is there to dampen the torsional vibration. If you put a driveshaft with a U-joint in it, the u-joint won't last too long. The engineers who designed it, put it there for a good reason. At $1200 it must be the heart of the drive line!
