Taking off 3rd crop this weekend, and have to say it's the poorest crop we've ever had. Not enough there to bother chasing around the feild with a baler, so we're chopping it. Between about 5 acres of late seeded oats & some sudan, and about 25-30 acres of alfalfa, we're gonna be lucky to get 4 loads in our 18' wagon. Wouldn't be so bad but while cutting, I noticed the last 2 feet of the sickle was bent, so I finished my swath and went home. Pulled out a new sickle we had up in the rafters(bought 2 this summer on sale for $17.50) and changed the drive head over. While the sickle was out noticed all the wear plates and hold down clips were shot, and so were a few of the guards. The local Fleet Farm didn't have any guards we needed (BU 221) but they had some for Deere(BU 220). Only real difference was the counter sunk bolt hole vs. the regular hole for a carriage bolt. They also only had 4 clips and 8 wear plates, our machine has 10 of each We also have another parts machine at home and most of the guards on it are in good condition, so we only bought 3 JD ones just to see if we could make them work. We cleaned out the clips and wear plates. Took off a few parts from the old machine, fixed up the outside end where the sickle was bent, and that's all my back and hips could take working on the head, even with it up on ramps to bring it up a little higher. Sad thing is, I'm only gonna be 20 next month, and I already feel like some of you old timers out there.
I guess that's what 9 years of wrestling does to a guy's body.

Friday's weather forecast was for no rain north of I-96, and then only scattered showers in the southern part of the state. We're nearly an hour's drive north of that area. Had hay down and ready to bale. So son & I got two loads done. No more wagons, so decided to bale rest on the ground. Just as I'm finishing, son comes flying into field - "There's thunder to the north," and it was sure turning dark up there. Well, I finished the last round, he took the other tractor and a wagon load down to neighbor lady's barn. Covered, as best we could the hay on the other wagon with a plastic tarp. Then down it came - 2.1 inches in a little over an hour. Needless to say, hay on ground is not just wet, it's soggy. Hay on wagon got wet down three layers, where tarp leaked and water soaked down. Hay on wagon floor is soaked on bottom. We've set out about a third of the load to try to dry in the sun. Hay in the field has been stacked tripod style and trying to dry - but I'm afraid that it's a lost cause. Weather forecast for today - Scattered showers this weekend. I give up! Anyone want 150 -170 soggy wet bales of hay?

Monday afternoon: Got another .55" of rain on that already soaked hay. I'm convinced that it's beyond salvage now. Worst, I will have to gather it all out of the field and dump it in the woods somewhere. a hard pill to swallow!

Boy, does that sound familiar. I've been on vacation for 2 weeks and still can't get everything mowed and baled. First week I cut 2 customers hay and it laid there for 3 days getting rained on. Last weekend I mowed another job and it got sprinkled on for 2 days. I have one left to do and my vacation is over today. We are 40 miles SW of Denver, CO and really need the rain but now are getting light frost and I have to get this finished soon. At least we don't have any fires this year.

Don I know what ya mean. We still had 12 acres down our way to get down of 2. Well in the 12 acres I killed 3 guards and 8 section on our old 469 new holland. Never had a problem in first crop on them fields. But when we raked the first it brought alot of small rocks up and thats what I got into. This was a new bunch of hey this yr was oats last yr. Also toke out a bushing in the head once too. What fun. Just finish second and already thinking of knocking down some third this week. But the mow is finally filling up. Still need more in there though.

Never had a rock take out a guard yet, although I did have the reel batting a rock around for a little bit then kicked it out. Just seeded that feild one down this spring. These ones were just worn so bad they matched the serated pattern on the blades. Ours is a NI 290, also known as the Ford 535. Ours is a very colorful machine, as our parts machine is the Ford and NI is our good one. Blue, white, green, orange, and cream/ off white.

Sounds a lot like me. My first mower (IH) had a bad crown on the bar from sitting upright for 15+ years, and was given an old New Idea (with PTO lift) that just couldn't seem to work right with my tractor, either to fast or to slow. Fortunatley, I have good neighbors and got one to finish my mowing for me and the baler started working. And yes, I'll be 20 in Nov. and I wrestled for only 3 years. All in all, I still enjoy doing this stuff, just more enjoyable when everything works right.

Yeah, it is much better when things work right. Also better when the hay adds up to something. I can't cut more than 7-8 acres at a crack, to frustrating trying to make a windrow. Development is moving in on all 4 sides, so we're gonna hold on long as we can. Don't know how long that is though.
