JD #5 ledger plate

I have a JD #5 mower. the ledger plate (I think that's what it is called, it is the plate with a serrated edge that is attached to the top of the rock guard the sickle section slides over it and cuts the hay.) is missing, it is on the far outboard end of the sickle bar, so I can't just replace the rock guard. there appear to be two stubs sticking out of the place where the pkate shouls be. How are the plates held in?

Those two stubs are the rivets that hold the ledger plate on. You need to carefully grind the heads off the rivets on the bottom of the outer sole. Go to John Deere and get the ledger plate. It will be different than the rest because it will be serrated on only one side and will be shaped different. It will have two countersunk holes where the bugle head rivets will go through. You will then have to hold those rivets in place and peen them over on the other side with a hammer. When I did mine, I went ahead and took the whole end off of the cutter bar and put it in a vice for easier service. May have to cut off the bolts that holds it on and replace them with new ones, but in the long run, it makes it a much easier job. Good luck.

Texp, The ledger plates are held on by rivits.
I just brought rivits and plates for my #5 from the local JD dealer. Plates were around a dollar each. Rivits came in bags of 50 if memory serves.

I dooubt the #5 mower operator manuel concerned itself with "knock out" ledger plates as described in the other post, don"t believe they were available until later. The knock out plates are relatively easy to change, problem I have had with them is that if the guard gets worn too much they don"t always stay real tight. If it turns out it does have a rivet, the ledger plate is a bit wider, you need to remove the guard, grind the bottom until you can make out the outline of the rivit, and beat the rivet out, toward the plate.

If they are like my model 39 they have a long point that slides up into the rock guard. Locks in place on the back just by knocking them in for enough to lock in on the back. I got mine out by sticking a old screw driver under the ledger plate and bend up slightly and pull out.

I have never had to replace one of these but the manual mentions replacing them when worn. It just doesn't say how. Reading between the lines where it references you to the guard and knife repair block, I can see that it makes reference to rivets, so I assume that these are riveted on. I did my best to examine the bar on the #5 that I have sitting on the tractor right now (I'm getting ready to cut) but without actually removing the guard, I cannot tell how the plate is attached for certain. I'm betting that before the day is out someone here can do me one better.
