Rhino CY60 shredder

I bought a used Rhino CY60 shredder and I"m a bit disappointed. It built very very stout but doesn"t cut well. Simply does not have high enough blade tip speed. I assume the gearbox ratio is such that it just doesn"t turn the blades fast enough. I have a friend with a junky, cheap built Howse shredder and it cuts terrific. At 540 PTO rpm it howls like a helicopter the blades turn so fast. Cuts grass like a finely tuned commercial lawnmower. My Rhino will outlast 50 of those Howse"s but I sure which I had a higher speed gearbox... Wonder what my ratio is vs. his on the Howse.

Funny, I just bought a SE 60 and have the same opinion. Mine is nearly new and the owner used it on a 540 pto. If I slow down (feel like I'll never get done) it cuts ok but at a reasonable clip, the grasses with the thin tough stem (Dallis gras in particular) leaves a few here and there.

I thought the problem was mulching, so I removed all the stuff in the back so that the grass would have an easy exit. Still did it.

Blades sharp? Blades turn in the right direction so as to put the sharp edge into the grass. Bought a Mowhawk one time that had been used by the HWY dept for years. Cut really crummy. Noticed the blades were real sharp. Got to checking and whomever put it together put the center gearbox in upside down and the blades were cuting (clubbing the grass) with the back side. Turned the box over and she cut just fine.

We run Rhino CY72's on some of our highway mowers on the rear deck. They are NOT a finish type mower bur more of a Bushhog. They do well on the hiway shoulder handeling the junk and rocks and the occasional delineator post the operators catch.

It looks as if that particular cutter is available with both 540 and 1000 P.T.O. speed gearboxes.

You got my curiousity up. I went to checking on several brands of mowers. I can't find your specific model of Rhino mower, but I'm assuming it's a 60", or 5 foot model. Rhino's "current" model of 5 footer, sports a blade speed that's about 4000 feet per minute LESS than most competitive brands. HMMMMM That wouldn't be so much of a problem when mowing brush, but it would hurt its ability to cut grass/weeds, and give a good "finish". Your Rhino runs a bit over 12,000 FPM. I have a Woods 7 footer that turns almost 18,000 FPM at blade tip. (Woods 5 foot model I looked up runs nearly 15000 FPM. Maybe it actually DOES run slower. A 1000 RPM machine running on 540 would run at almost 1/2 speed. Don't EVER recall seeing ANY mower as small as 5 foot, built to run at 1000 RPM. John

da- it's late try this again. you might have a 1000 rpm shredder that some one changed the female spline to 540 [end goes on tractor]seen this more then once.

I have found this through a bit of research. Rhino makes 3 "grades" of mowers. SE, TW and CY. SE is very light duty, TW is medium and CY is heavy duty. The CY60 is a 5 foot model and it is intended for 540 PTO rpm. It just simply has a slower gearbox to enhance in cutting brush up to 3-4" the Rhino website says. I really need a mower designed more for cutting grass that is a higher speed I guess. Bottom line is I have never seen any 5 foot mower built as stout as this Rhino CY60. My IH364 diesel has a heck of a time handling it, it is very heavy.

My SE60 is the baby brother but it is extremely well built, well engineered, built to sit out in th weather and not rust up (due to trapped water) and has an enormous gearbox, one I'd expect on an 8' mower. Just needs to cut like a finish mower. LOL
