I'm having trouble aligning my rock guards with my knifes on my mower. There is too much of a gap between most of them.I have used new guards from T.S.and ford. The Gap is the same. I have the manual. Hitting the bottom of the guard near the tip upward, even after heating is not working. The guard will break before it bends upward. Please advise Bill

When I got my 501, it had a hodge podge of guards on it (read I didn't know what I was doing when I bought it). I wound up buying a complete set from Rural King store (some areas they are called Big R stores). Much better selection that TSC. I had to put new wear plates on too to keep the cutter bar in the right spot.

I found that a few of the guards were a little low, rather than hi, but only by a little bit. I took them back off & filed a little material from the "notch" where they fit up against the bar & that did the trick to get them all in alignment.

Now if I can just quit finding odd pieces of iron sticking out of weeds, I'd have it made.

Instead of using a hammer to bend the guards up or down, take apiece of pipe 2 or 3 ft long that will slip over the end of the guard back about to the tip of the ledger plate. You can bend the guard up or down with a greater degree of control than with a hammer.
Our farm had quite a few stones in the fields, and this method was about a daily thing with me.

Bill,

Chris is absolutely right about bending the hold down brackets down so that the blade rides on the ledger plates. Also, I personally have never had any luck with trying to bend the rock guards up when they are installed on the bar. I always take mine off, put them into a vise, and bend them with a hammer. Sometimes I have to take the guard off and put it back on more than once to get it right, but I still prefer to do it that way instead of whacking the guard while it's on the bar.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Bill, don't hit the guards near the tip, hit them further back under the ledger plate. I tried some guards that were made in china , they broke with one strike. also try removing shims from under the hold down plates like pete said.

I'll try farther back on the guards. I have no shims under the hold down clips. I have removed them. Thanks You guys. I went to T.S. today they are turning into a walmart. Not carrying equipment parts like they used to. Bill

Not sure about your mower but many mowers have ware plates. this is the thin piece of metal under your hold down clips. The purpose of this plate is to hold the rear or the section up and make sure the section is making proper contact with the ledger plate. If the front tip of the section is not contacting the ledger plate first then the ware plates are low. Just a look will tell you how bad they are worn. If worn replace them before attempting to align the guards and tighten the hold down clips. If the ware plates are worn then tightening the hold down clips will only makes matters worse.

I had the same deal - it was a multiple part problem - is there a couple of guards that are holding the sickle sections up maybe too far - maybe they are bent and need replaced or hammered down so the sickle goes down.
i tried to use the outer ends and the ledger plates out hrere as a kind of a guide for that or just take the ones that are bent UP the most and pound them down first.....then

next can you take your finger and press down on the leading edge of a sickle tooth point and will it go down? if yes, then you have to hammer your hold downs down tighter - or maybe replace....

then i took a sledge without heat and beat them around until they were all pressed up against the bottom of the sickle - not perfect yet , but much better than it has been in along time....
