I was wondering if there exists a tractor implement which is used to pick up small rocks. I recently aquired six acres riddled with small rocks and am looking for a way to pick these all up efficiently.

You got a lot of replies I didn't look at, so I'm probably repeating what is there, but for 6 acres, pick them up by hand!!!! My goodness.

I spent my early summers picking rocks up on 200 acres. Six acres, what are you thinking???? So, get to work..... . :)

I agree with Armstrong Loader. Picking up rocks is what kids are for.

Friends of the family use it for punishment. Do something wrong - 1 hr of rocks into the frontloader. Really wrong - many hours.

Yeah, when they get into high school you'd be surprised how big a boulder they can roll out of the ground.

If they've been good that week, you can let 'em use the chain and tractor to get it clear up out of the ground.

All: We had 4 Armstrong loaders. Two on each side of a converted low slung wagon. My two sisters and a brother could pick a heck of o lot of rocks in 2 or 3 days.. it was just another late spring job after corn\beans were planted.. The bigger stuff was picked\pried unto a loader..We also didn't cost father anything extra and it kept us out trouble..good clean work for teen age kids.. harvey

How big are your small rocks ???

Bigger small rocks (6") can be handled by a special blade, usually attached to a CAT... Have seen 'em called a brush rake. root rake, rock rake...

It's basically an open blade with heavy steel teeth on the bottom... rakes the rocks/roots etc. up into windrows where you can attack them with a loader.

Smaller rocks ? I dunno...

Neighbour has a 6' attachment that a local welder made him for rock picking. It goes on the front end loader and has a lot of tines about 3- 4" apart. He works the ground then drives over it with the front of the tines in the ground a couple of inches and the back of the bucket above the ground.Soil is supposed to sift through but rocks get pushed ahead.I never had anything to do with it so I can't comment on how effective it is.

Up home we used what was referred to as a "stone boat". This was a device perhaps 4 feet wide, 8 feet long made of 2 x 6's and was towed behind a tractor. You drove out into the field, got off, threw some rocks on, drove a little, got off...

Where we farmed until 1955, in Saskatchewan, we also had a "stone boat" as you suggested but we did not have any rocks on our farm. We used our stone boat daily to pull through the barn to load on manure and take to the field and spread with a fork, however we usually pulled ours with a team of horses.

OOOOH the good old days. I called my old mule Fodder Fossil. Had to watch out in the spring time after the grass greened up, if you was too close behind Fodder Fossil when he pooted, it looked like you had green measles.

Jay, if you find one for a decent price, let me know. I've got the same problem in the pen where my pygmy goats and calves are at. I'd love to get that pen looking better with a nice stand of fescue, but with all the rocks, well..... .... Let me know, too, what the hp and PTO requirements are if'n ya find it. Good luck, Wolf

TSC has them called a rock rake. Works on regular 3 point hook up, it covers 6', and I think I gave $165 for mine. It works very good to pick out rocks with or to rake out the barn. The thing it's best at is cleaning and arena, it sifts the sand and gets all the trash and poop out.

I forgot to say it works fine with a 28hp tractor.

You can broadcast seed & harrow the field, that would not damage anything & ignore the rocks.

I think for less than 50 acres you folks sound kind of scared of work to be trying farming, but I mean this in a smiley, friendly way....

There are all kinds of stone rakes, windrowers, stone pickers, and the like. Some attach lke a bucket, some are pull behind, some load into trucks. They all sort of look like a fork, and work better in loose, sandy, dry soil. Wet clay lumps are hard to sort from rocks.

Since you are sifting through a couple inches of dirt, they need horsepower like a plow maybe. Depends how wide the picker is. Used is hard to find, new (& even used) is pretty expensive. Most have hydraulic cylinders on them.

Jay: I looked an older one over at a threashing show a few weeks ago. It was an older one from the '50-60's i'd guess.. It looked like a very low slung manure spreader and the tines to pickup rocks were in back.. It was PTO driven.. Just in case you favor older stuff this may fit your needs.. Try posting a wanted ad.. good luck..harvey

Yeah, I know they make them for 3 points. TSC and Ag-Supply have them. They call it a rock pick around here. We use them to clean out the barn. They look like a lawn rake for tractors.

Some implement dealers have one sitting around for rental. The ones I know about take a higher H.P. tractor.
