Nancy,
I fought the same problem. Make sure your hold downs are in good shape. The way I finally got mine right was to heat the center of the guard with a torch from the bottom & bend them up with a hammer until they are up against the sections. I thought the mower worked OK before, but with a new bar & sections, good ledger plates on the guards, & sections laying against the ledger plates, I can't believe the difference. I can mow in 2nd gear where I would have clogged in 1st before.

Absolutely.... in reply to JDMark, 09-02-2004 05:14:42
Adjustments from old manuals can be interesting to interpret. A lot changes in 50 years...especially those 50 years. Once you get it right the mower will cut great. Don"t know if I mentioned it before, but the knife will slide pretty easily in the bar and can trap your fingers so keep them clear. Also, pay VERY careful attention to the lubrication chart on this mower or you will make a lot of adjustments for nothing. When it says every two hours, it means it.
