Whats the best equipment out there now for cutting about 2 acres of bermuda grass for hay? I can"t afford a disk mower and I"ve heard that sickle mowers are a real pain.

Thanks in advance.

There used to be a guy here that went by the name Burrhead. Anyway, what he did for small cuttings is to use a 5 foot brushhog, by cutting the left side off the mower. That way it would shoot all the grass out the side, instead of chopping it all up. He said it worked ok, just make sure there is no one in harms way, because if you hit something it will be thrown quite a distance.

If you can find a Woods Cadet 60 or 72 rotary mower, they had a removeable side for just that purpose.

Thanks for the responses guys. Guess I"ll be looking for a sickle mower. The drum mower even at 50% price of disk mower may still be out of my league.

Don"t know who you talked to, but a good sickle is the way to go.

CCM drum mowers mow with the same technology of the disc mower but with the purchase price 40-60% less than a disc mower.
- Exterior Hydraulics are not needed
- Safety Release to prevent damage
- CAT 1 & 2 hitch for T-165 - Complete with a PTO with an over-ride clutch
- Belt Driven & with quick change blades
- Mows up to 5 acres an hour and WILL NOT CLOG UP

We bought a few sickle mowers at auction over the years - and found that none of them had been assembled and adjusted correctly. If you get a sickle mower adjusted right (register, dividing board, cutterbar tilt and angle, etc.) it should work good for you.

I've got bermuda in my (2.5 acre) lowland field and use an ancient sicklebar mower on an ancient tractor and do ok. It does take some getting used to, experimenting with best ground speed and gear, but isn't that bad.

Two biggest problems I have are 1) getting the stuff to dry if I let it grow too long and stalky, so I try to mow before it gets to that point and 2) Got bindweed in the same field, which will clog the cutter pretty quick if I let it grow too long...that's my biggest problem.

So I'd say the bermuda isn't a big problem and you can find a decent mower cheap (think I paid $400 for mine, and I've since seen many similar ones lots cheaper). They're reliable, and frankly a lot more pleasant to use than the more modern things--pleasant snipping sound rather than the loud whine and grind.

Just my 2 cents.

Not familiar with that grass, so can"t tell you. But, 2 acres is the problem - too small to buy anything good to cut it with. Any way you can expand to 10 and make it worth your while?
