Rotary mower with a wheeltire attached to pto

Sorry if this gets kind of long, but I was in a rural area recently and saw a rotary mower like none I"ve ever saw before. There was a wheel and tire attached to the pto shaft and the tire made contact with what looked like a stump jumper turned upside down. There was no gearbox, but a large shaft that was attached to the upside down looking stump jumper that the tire made contact with. There wasn"t a brand name on the mower, that I could find. It had a 3pt connection and was attached to 4020 John Deere. The brush that had been mowed down was awesome, 4" to 6" in diameter. It looked like a torando had passed thru it. Has anyone else saw a mower like this, and what brand is it?

We"ve had one for over 10 years now. They are Sidewinder mower"s which used to be built by FMC but they were bought out by Gilcrest which started building those mowers again a couple years ago. They are built very tough, most "heavy duty" mowers are rated to about 4" material but the Sidewinder"s are rated to "whatever your tractor will push over" according to the manual. It depends on the type of tree but I know from experience that they will mow off a 10" tree if you go slow enough.

It is a great mower but replacement of the wheel is very expensive. On the quail plantations in south GA they were used often but the repairs were a problem. Now the most common mower is the Brown Tree cutter. It will take down a 6 inch tree and leave nothing. Technology progresses.

It's called a "Sidewinder" and I never heard of one til last year when someone mentioned it on this forum. They still make them, but they are pretty expensive. They are reported by owners to "cut darn near anything."

The tire is used as a means to transmit power, while allowing for slippage for an excessive load. Don't need a slip clutch, shear pin, or gear box. Used on some brush cutters, cement mixers, etc.
