Hey everyone,

I was at an equipment auction on Saturday and made several purchases. The auctioneer came down the line of equipment and came to this old 5 wheel hay rake. I had no intentions of buying the thing and no one wnated to bid so he said would anyone take it for $25. I thought, "Why not? If I can use the thing $25 isn't bad, and if I can't really use it then there are some parts I can get off the thing worth $25 to me." So I bought it. From what I know DARF made hay rakes for John Deere, New Idea and a few other companies. Bretchford Equipment out of California owns Darf now and from what I have heard the new rakes are pretty good. So the question is what do ya'll know about the old Darf 5 wheel hay rakes? Can I get the few parts I need from somewhere or do I need to go with my follow up plan and take the thing apart and use it's compnents for other projects? I also purchased an old John Deere 71 Flexi-planter, Badger forage wagon, Oliver Superior spreader, John Deere Van Brunt CC cultivator, and an old unidentifiable disc in good condition. There weren't many people there so I got everything at very good prices. Hopefully I'll hear from someone about that DARF rake. Thanks.

I bought a Darf over 30 years ago and still use it. I got teeth from my JD dealer. The biggest problem was having to go slow to keep from breaking teeth on rocks and woodchuck mounds. About 4 years ago I had a chance to get some wheels that have long teeth that go all the way to a center hub, so I changed it over. They are indestructable. I can go as fast as I can stay on the tractor seat. I'm not sure what brand they are, possibly Lely. I welded a short chain to the frame behind each wheel so I can chain them up and just use two to flip the windrow. I have a ground-drive Grimm tedder I tow behind the rake so I can turn and ted in the same trip. HTH
