Does anyone know where to purchase these? I want to use electrolysis to clean some parts but cannot locate the chemicals. There is a Red Devil brand of lye but the usual sources (Walmart, hardware, supermarket) do not have this and nobody even seems to have heard of Sodium Carbonate. Anybody have a good source?

Dave:

If you can"t find Lye (Sodium Hydroxide - NaOH), try Drano. It"s lye with a few grey Magnesium Sulfate crystals in it. It won"t hurt to use it in your electrolysis bath or to make lye gravy for paint removal.

As was mentioned, the Sodium Carbonate is a common pool chemical for raising pH, but it"s best known as a laundry detergent booster. The most common one I"ve found is Arm & Hammer "Super" Washing Soda. It looks just like its little brother, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda...same yellow box but bigger. The size of a powered laundry detergent box.

Another source of Sodium Carbonate is ARM & HAMMER, called Super Washing Soda. Safeway stores here handle it.

Sodium Carbonate is washing soda. Might find that in an old hardware store. Or a weak solution in my faucet since that what comes out of a water softener replacing the calcium carbonate.

I found my Lye at the local farm store (farm and fleet) in the kitchen/household drain cleaners.

The Sodium Carbonate was in the pool product section at Walmart. Goes by the term "Ph Plus"

Do a search on Google for suppliers. I believe the reason lye is getting hard to come by is because of it"s potential for misuse in the manufacture of "meth".

Only one of the grocery stores in my area carries the Red Devil Lye ; but Arm & Hammer washing powder ( yellow/white box )is available in the laundry soap area . Be careful mixing the lye with water .
