At a farm equipment auction this spring, they had a brush hog type cutter that I'd never seen. At first glance, it looked like most brush hogs. but the body was made of very thick sheeting, easily twice as thick as any heavy duty cutter I've seen. It was about 5' wide and the back was rounded. The gearbox was more round than usual, and it split along a diagonal to get access to the gears. It was painted yellow, was definately not home-made, and it had a brand name that I didn't recognize, but have since forgotten. Even though it was used, the heavy construction was such that it was in very good shape. I didn't pay much attention as I thought that it would surely go very high and I was concerned that it was too heavy for my JD 850 to even lift. I later found that it had sold for about $500. Does anybody know what it was and how much it would weigh? If my tractor could handle the weight, I will definately not pass up another one.

Dan,

Both Servis Equipment Company and International Harvester Company used to make super heavy duty cutter models simular to what you describe. They were designed for heavy duty brush cutting. The Servis was painted yellow. Both were used in the application mentioned like the use by Georgia Power.

I saw one used by Georgia Power to mow power lines. It was thich as you describe, and had 4 stump-jumper blades. This 6' mower was on a 7710 New Holland (I don't know HP, but it was BIG!) 4X4, actually 8X8! The operator said it would cut whatever you could get under it! I was impressed.

Don't know about your cutter but Bush Hog used to offer the Model 406 rotary and if you could drive over something, this mower would chop it up. It also worked best with about 75 horse. I hesitate to say it but I don't know if there is a super duty rotary mower that you could safely operate with an 850 Deere. Tom

I've heard stories of too heavy a mower with too light a tractor, if the blades hit something solid they have enough momentum to toss the back end of the tractor around. Just being able to lift the mower doesn't mean the tractor can safely operate it.

Can't help ya on the cutter, tho that diagonal-split gearbox sounds awfully familiar. I do have one observation, however:

I have a medium duty Woods M5 that I run on a JD 750, and it is ALL that tractor wants to pick up. If the rig you're looking at is as heavy-duty as it sounds, I suspect it would be too much for the 850. I'm basing that on the assumption that the 850's hydraulics aren't significantly stronger than the 750's.

Thanks for your comment. I've got a JD 506 cutter and my JD 850 picks it up like it's not even there. I've got 4 weights on the front, and the cutter is half rusted away, so it should. The mystery cutter I'm talking about could easily be twice as heavy as my 506, judging from its appearance.
