Pros or cons? Found a nice used one for $4950 But I don't know what to look for. Are they good machines? Any help would be great and thanks.

I purchased a used NH 617 this spring and cut all my hay with it. Mine had been used for two hay seasons by a a custom operator. Paid $3,400.

Anyway, I looked it over good before the purchase. I had to replace all of the cutter disks because they wear on the leading edge in sand country. Also replaced a few skid shoes and put a plate on the main shoe under the cutter head. Total repairs for wear out parts was around $600.

This is a good machine, but it is heavy and is about all my MF 275 tractor wants to handle. The "breakaway feature" is nice, but I have had to adjust it as tight as it will go. Somewhat of a pain to have it "break" back continually in real heavy or wet grass.

T.C., these are good machines. They have the modular cutterbar and that sure beats the earlier ones that used the Kuhn cutterbar. Before I purchased this unit for $5000 dollars, I would check with a dealer or two and see what you can buy a new for. I think $5000 is a bit much, but that is only an opinion. Steve
