New Holland 469 haybine

I just bought a NH 469 haybine this spring. I never ran one before but I really like it. I have clunking noises coming from the drive gear box when I make a sharp corner in the field. I took the cover off and noticed quit a lot of play in the keyway of the driven gear. Also if I hold the drive shaft for the rolls and cutting unit, I get about a 1/2" movment on the over ride clutch (part with the pins). I want to take this area apart to get a look at it but I don't know what to take apart first. Can anyone out there help me?

Tom, both Gerald and Sid are correct, however, the noise could also and probably is coming from the over-running clutch. The best and easiest way to fix it is to make sure the pins are up tight against the drive jaws and weld the clutch solid. I'm serious. New Holland has not used the over-running clutch since about 1974 or 5. Only if you are using a tractor without live pto does the clutch come in handy. As far as the keyway in the gearbox gear, You will have to disassemble the box to replace it and you will have to decide if it is worth it to you. The noise is not coming from that loose key. Steve

Thanks for getting back with me so soon. I don't think the noise is coming from the clutch but I do think it may contributing to it. I got off the tractor with the haybine running and making the noise and felt it in the gear box housing. It is some where in the drive train to the rolls. It almost sounds like the upper roll arms hitting the stops but it does it the loudest when turning a corner. Could it be the rolls coming out of time with each other because of the slop in the clutch? Is the clutch half with the pins keyed to the shaft? Anyway, it has to come apart. I would like to know were to start and how to proceed without taking things apart I don't have to. Thanks again.

Even though you felt the noise in the gearbox, I still contend without even seeing your machine that the whole problem is in the over-running clutch. When all the driveline parts wear and whenever the pto is not perfectly straight, the clutch will sit there and hammer back and forth. Sure, you felt the vibration in the gearbox because the vibration travels, but if that clutch was welded together, I assure you that the niose and vibration would stop. If you still want to tear things apart, you will have to remove the gearbox and the plate the box is mounted on as a unit. Also, the output shaft has an inner carrier bearing just inside the frame, in from the 2 chains that will have to be removed. Hope this helps, Steve

Thanks Steve, I will do as you suggested. I still want to replace the key on the driven gear since it is about to shear.I can also move back and forth the part of the clutch that has the pins in it. Is this also keyed to the shaft?

Lengthen the tractor draw bar or shorten the pto shaft. You could be closing the shaft and making the inner end bump the u-joint. You can't do that much until you break something. Been there, Done that, have the scrap metal.

For all 540 rpm implements that attach to the drawbar it should be 14 inches from the end of the PTO shaft to the center of the hole in the drawbar.

Part of that clunking noise might be in the U-joints.
