I've got a Befco PHD that's ok, nothin special. I think their cutters are about same. How deep are your pockets? As far as brands go, most have lite, med and heavy duty cutters. Really good ones that come to mind are Bush Hog 406 and anything from Servis. I trashed a med duty KK in less than 3yrs and still have a pull Servis Gyro built in 60s. I guess it depends how many cutters you want to buy in next 5 years, 10 years, 20,..... ....

I have a Howse 10 ft mounted. When I first got it ~ it vibrated a lot. I removed the supports they had and redesigned with a heavier piece of square tube like piece, welding that to the wheeel carrier and thus tranfering the vibes to the ground. runs a lot smoother now ~ wouldn't trade it even for a Deere. Buy the heaviest model you can afford. even just mowing grass you can get into a lot of tear up with unseen obstacles.

Bernie,
Indy pretty much sums it all up. I have a king kutter brush hog that is used for only field mowing (TALL GRASS), I would never let it near brush. It is reflective of the price... it cuts but it vibrates and oil cans cause the metal is so thin. But for mowing field grass it is fine.
Regarding your question:
I just bought an 11 foot batwing BEFCO finish mower. It is heavier all the way around than the 2 Land Prides I looked at. One of the guards vibrates just a little, but that is just sheetmetal belt cover. I do have a heavy brush hog for brush etc. You really get what you pay for. It is hard to spend $2500 on a nice brush hog when Tractor Supply has King Kutters for $600. But I look at it when there is 100 pounds of blades, gear box, and PTO shaft behind my back spinning at 200mph I"ll spend the extra money if cutting brush and saplings. Just my thoughts.

Lotta choices... First you need to norrow down your needs a bit.
What are you going to be mowing? Pastures? A lawn? Clearing ground? How big of a tractor do you have? (HP)
As the "demand" for quality goes up, so does the price. If you"re going to be using it to cut anything more than grass and weeds, go HEAVY duty. It"ll last much longer. A good many "cheaper" models are plenty good for mowing light stuff, on a "limited basis". You won"t take a cheap mower and cut 50 hours a week all summer either. They won"t take that kind of use.
Beefco makes a good "mid-grade", light to medium duty mower. Not GREAT, but good.
You will find out that some of the better "name brand" mowers aren"t that much more.
Even with light/medium duty mowers, Bush Hog, Woods, and a few others make a better mower.
They run smoother, are better designed, and parts are easier to get, should you need them.
Take good care of what ever you get, don"t abuse it, and just about anything can be "OK", provided you get what you need going in. John
