709 Rotary Mower Question

I just used my "New" JD 709 rotary mower for the first time this weekend. I have been mowing roads all year with the sickle, wow was this nicer!

Only concern I have is whenever I turn the tractor more than about 15 degrees from the mower the front box (where the two shafts connect) rattles like crazy! One seriously loud racket.

The bearing seems to be ok, sheet metal is a little banged up. I quickly looked at removing the metal but it is attached permenantly to the bearing bracket.

Is that normal to make some noise or should it sound the same when turning?

a consant velocity joint will help a great deal. Go price one an then go home and learn how to make wide sweeping turns. good luck your next problem might be the tires many flats if they are regular air filled.

No, I have the solid tires so no worries there. I try make wide turns but not always possible, will just start shutting off PTO when I get in those situations.

You should have bought a mounted is possible! The pulltypes are several times more dangerous. Especially a stiff machine like the "709" if You hit a large object they can jump up in the air. I once was told by a neibhor who hit a large rock that his jumped about 4 feet off the ground! The gearbox is rated at 100hp (540), or 110hp (1000 rpm) thats a lot of hp pushing those blades into a solid hard to move object before the slip clutch gives in!

Is this a pull type mower? With a 3ph mower, the pto shaft stays fixed in relation to the tractor when you turn, and the U-joints are there for flexibility when you raise amd lower the hitch. Mine is a 3ph mounted version and I don"t hear any sort of driveline chatter. Perhaps a close inspection of thos U-joints is in order, in case they are worn out and are liable to break.

Sorry, I should have clarified that. Yes, it is a pull type.

A typical U joint can only take 'x' amount of angle, perhaps 30 degrees? Beyond that, it chatters & is hurting itself. The simple remidy is - don't turn that short.

Newer designs, for more money of course, have a double-U joint in ther, called a constant velocity joint. These can take much more bending without binding. Also some have special piviot hitches or the drawbar hitch actually connects to the lower 3pt like a semi-mounted plow. These line up the 2 u-joints much more evenly in the middle of the bend, and can take a bigger angle.

As others say, it can be a sign of something ready to fall apart too. Check out your U joint bearing caps very closely, $12 to fix now, much more when it blows apart....
