It looks like I"m going to have to get another
square baler. I have two neighbors with
square balers for sale; a MF 124 that needs some work that will probably be dirt cheap and an NH 275 that also needs some work, but I"ve baled with it this week. There is also the possibility of a newer Case IH inline baler for
considerably more money. Any advice or
suggestions? I"m personaly leaning towards the 275, but I"d like to hear from some other folks.

Dave;
I like my 268 NH baler, it makes a decent bale and is reliable to a fault. I had the chance to use a CIH 8520(?) inline to finish up my last 1500 or so bales. I am waiting for time to dull how impressed I was with it, before I call the owner to negoiate a purchase price. Consistant, solid bales, easy to use and will have 3 people on a 20 foot wagon yelling for you to slow down.
If you plan on doing this hay thing for a while try to swing the inline, I am. Roy

My MF124 works well, but when I do need a part, it's expensive. So that one you're looking at better be "dirt cheap" if it needs work because the parts cost will go high in a hurry if it needs much.

I've never used a NH baler but my impression from reading this board is that parts are much more available.

For those of us who have never used equipment made after 1970.....what is an "in line baler"?

Inline balers are pulled directly behind the tractor. The tractor straddles the windrow just like a round baler. Hesston made them for Case IH and New Idea. (AGCO) The hay is fed straight into the bale chamber. They are great balers and easy to operate. They have more plunger strokes per minute than most conventional balers.

We have a NH 275 with a 53A thrower that works like a dream..... ..... .But, having said that I"d try to get a inline baler if I could at a cheap price. Them things really handle hay.

As with every opinion on here, experiances with old equipment vary greatly depending on how it was treated over the years and the location of said equipment.

My buddy in SW WI just got a MF 124 baler and he tells me it is a very very finicky machine. The thrower is very inconsistant - one bale will fly back and explode on the back of the rack, the next will barely clear the front gate and the third will fly over the back onto the ground. I mowed for him last weekend and I can tell you that it does make a very tight bale. We had to switch to 7200 twine to maximize bale density.

I am impressed with inline balers. They make a very tight, consistant bale quickly. Of course, the bale is very different from the typical swing out baler bale - the stems are vertical in the bale, not horizontal. Just like a big square baler.

Dave: Both NH 275 and MF 124 have good reputations. I've never owned or baled with either. Over the years I had a lot of farmer neighbors that had them, and you just never heard anything bad about those balers.

I had a NH S-69 myself and if that 275 is any relation, it will be a good baler. I also had a close neighbor who owned possibly 3 or 4 MF in his lifetime. I know at least one of them was a 124. He was type of guy that never said much, but you can bet your bottom dollar, they were good or there wouldn't have been a 2nd, 3rd or 4th MF baler. He probably baled 20,000 bales per year. Today he is 87, still has his Farmall 200 he bought new

Up here MF parts are $$$. The overrunning clutch ate the biscuit in the MF224 we use and it would have been 800$ in parts to replace them. Luckily 150$ in parts and a visit to the machine shop for 70$ got us going again.

There aren"t any for parts in our area either so we have to buy new.

Our JD336 we just got impresses me more despite being slower.
Ken
